Mine used to run ALOT. I had a reprogram at independent shop about 1 year ago and run time after turning the car off if less.
There is a big saga with the thermostat and retrofit parts, permanent and temporary. More than I could type here or remembber accurately. Anyway, just try to get the most updated thermostat and programming. Make sure everything is plugged into the most updated temp sensors. I have some temporary temp sensors that arent used anymore in my car.
Not sure if that helped, but hopefully it send you in the right direction.

An erratic coolant temperature sensor caused the radiator fan in my R56 non-s to come on at random times, even when the engine was completely cold (i.e. in the morning without even firing it up but only switching on power).
You can check the readings of the temperature sensor in the hidden menu:
Read the video description to find out how to calculate the required code from your VIN and how to move around in the menu. The menu position for the coolant temperature is either 7.01 or 9.01 (one is the battery voltage, the other the coolant temperature, I'm not sure at the moment).
If the temperature readings are significantly higher than what they should be or (as in my case) randomly change to three star symbols (***), then your temperature sensor needs replacing and may well be the cause of the radiator coming on. If you are lucky, the thermostat encasing in your car has a removable temperature sensor. If not, the whole thermostat encasing has to be replaced. In this case, I would recommend getting the original and updated BMW one (along with the required adapter cable) which has the removable temperature sensor.
