Check You High Pressure Fuel Pump!!!

Unfortunately just had a wonderful R56 customer leave my shop with a diagnosed faulty high pressure fuel pump. Just wanted to remind everyone with the N14 and N18 motors that the extended warranty for these through MINI USA is 10 years (from the build date) or 120,000 miles. My customer came in just over the wire at 10/08 build date.

Limp mode. Massive misfires. You will get a code too.

It was more of a warning to not wait if you have a code for random misfires. I had mine sometimes fail, sometimes not and replaced coils, spark plugs, on the way to figuring this out. It's fine that I changed those but that was money I didn't need to spend and I would have been really upset if the time I wasted pushed me past the warranty time frame.

When mine was going, I actually got a fuel rail and HPFP code. Easy peasy.

It is part "scam" though. I have an appointment Monday for the problem but I'm going to replace the spark plugs before hand. The shop says if there is "any other" problem, they will charge me $130 to diagnose the problem. Pretty easy to say...."well we think it is the fact you need new plugs since you are past the recommended life of the plugs...please deposit $130 to learn more".

My HPFP is only "acting up"...it hasn't completely died yet. Also, I think most of the time these pumps are dying because the fuel filter isn't replaced and "crap" starts leaking over the fuel filter "wearing out" the pumps internals. So I replace dthe fuel filter this week and it looked like someone poured black paint on and into the fuel filter. Based on who that looked, it needs to be replaced every 25,000 miles max.

My 2007 had bad HPFP around 2008-09. It was mostly hard to start first thing in the morning. Sputtered, ran rough, I'd give it some gas, and then once it started ran fine. No codes. Finally it wouldn't start at all, and THEN it threw a code.

Yep, that is what is happening to me. Takes an extra crank to start on "cold engine", runs rough igle and usually throws codes for misfires and bad exhaust gases and then throws the warning on the fuel pump as well. I'm going to replace my spark plugs so Mini can't tell me that is the problem and then take it in for the free replacement. At this point I have replaced everything that could cause this except for the low pressure fuel pump which I think would just keep the car from starting at all.
