Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs.
I have read a few of the articles as it seems to be kinda a normal thing. I will start with the issue: The car just started throwing an oil light and I checked the oil and it was maybe 1/2 low so I instantly filled it. The next time I drove the car it threw the light when I came to a stop at a stop light and as soon as I touched the gas it goes off. What do you think and if you have links to this answer clearly please post it as there are a few of them already.
I hope it's not the bearings since I just built this forged motor back in June with King Tri Metal bearings. I'll double check the sensor and check the wire while waiting for the Innovate gauge to come in.
Well today I got the car up on the lift and changed the oil pressure switch and that went extremely easy, so I knew it wasn't going to be it. Sure enough after getting the car to operating temperature the light comes back on at idle. I am able to pull the plug from above and snap this beautiful picture and am REALLY hoping that this is it. I will be replacing this and installing the Innovate oil temp and pressure gauge. Does anyone know what this switch is and if it can be purchased separately?
I wouldn't worry about replacing anything at this point until you determine exactly what oil pressure you have on the engine. Your switch may be good.
You can get a cheap mechanical oil pressure test kit from harbor freight. Comes with gauge, hose, and a couple different size adapters for the threads.
Hook up this testing gauge, and see what your pressure reads on the test gauge. You need to see what the readings are when the engine is both cold and hot.
I don't like electrical oil pressure gauges.... they don't give an exact reading.
Test your oil pressure before throwing parts at a problem
I found that my spring in my oil filter housing worked pass the bottom of the filter causing the light to pop on at idle. Then go away will running. Never purchase a aftermarket oil filter again. Only use oem ones.

I did an oil change weeks ago and after several starts it did this. Iabout to see if that's what's wrong. Normal fun on a Saturday night...hell it's better than going to my wife's old works Christmas party

Bryan A383wing is right - find out what real oil pressure you have.
My understanding is that the MINI oil switch is set around 5lbs psi - ON below that, OFF above it. Really not much use.
I'd change the oil & filter with good brand names & then test the real oil pressure with the HF kit suggested. You should be seeing around 50lbs psi running normally.
Now go & enjoy the party!
Ok, first I want to thank you all. I will get a mechanical on it ASAP BUT it being a Saturday night I threw it on the lift and changed the filter to a MINI one I picked up at the dealership. I also double checked my plunger. That looked normal. I drove it and same thing...no light until operating temp and then light ONLY at idle.
Well today I cleaned the connector, tightened up the Sensor and drained and refilled with mobile One 0w40 and now everything seems to be working as normal. Fingers crossed!

That's a rather unusual weight of oil. What year and model is it? I am wondering if the 0 weight part is having a negative effect because mine takes 5w-30 as per the owner's manual.
