Replacing Serpentine belt

HI,

I saw a video on this and it appears a special tool is used to remove the belt tension (or a "flat" box wrench).
Is there another way to do this w/o special tools?

Thanks

Take the slam panel off first then use a shifting spanner/adjustable spanner. No special tool required on the Gen 2 MINI

From below:
If a standard flat box wrench is no longer than 31 cm, the bracket holding the air conditioning pipe is not in the way.

From above:
If the headlights and lock bridge are removed, either a standard flatbox or a 15 degrees angled wrench can be used. After re-assembly the lights need to be checked and re-adjusted.

Have done it both ways and I much prefer the method from below (both less work and no re-adjusting of lights required). Spent about EUR 15 (in Germany) for a Gedore "Nr. 4" series wrench and haven't regretted it.

It can be done without the tool but it's a huge pain. Heck the tool isn't even a facotry MINI tool as MINI says a belt change is over 2hrs labor.
So get the tool as it will save you a huge hassle. We offer each individual wrench for both sizes, or you can get the pair. Most people just order the individual one for the large size nut as that is 90% of the cars out there.

An important thing to add is that a helper is needed when doing it from below.

Not with our belt tool
You use your left hand on the tool to lever it back, then reach your right hand up between the exh and tensioner to push the pin on the spring in to lock the tensioner. If you can't get your hand in there you can use a long pry bar to push the pin in to lock it. That is how I do it in the shop every day.

Thank you for this tip, I will try it next time.
(I tried reaching the pin with my other hand but couldn't as the car was not on a lift and I was working through the wheel arch).

What is the recommended interval to service the serpentine belt and how do you inspect it? I know that it has been replaced at the end of the 48K warranty.

I really just check and anytime I see cracks I replace. Otherwise a general rule is every 60k miles.
