R55 - Play in steering - Changes depending on sport mode toggle
Hi all.
Car is a 2013 Clubman S.
When stationary, I can move the steering wheel back and forth and feel a distinct clunk in the steering as it engages with the wheels. It is not particularly loud, only a slight noise comes from what seems to be the steering column.
It can also be felt when pulling into a driveway/parking lot where you have the break in the curb.
Overall it just feels a bit loose.
Turning on sport mode significantly reduces the magnitude of the issue, from a clunking feeling to a clicking perhaps.
I took it to a dealer and they claimed they felt nothing. I took them out and forced them to notice it.. they then brought out another customers car and while there was some looseness, it was not a bad as my car.
Their solution was replace the rack and see.. I said no thanks.
All suspension components are in good shape, no play in tie rods, ball joints, control arms, etc. Is apparent, the car has about 40k miles.
It feels similar to bad tie rod ends, but again inspection of those yielded no concerns..
Any ideas?
