Noisy driver side valve train.

My 2010 clubman n12 has been idling funny and the valve train is loud, especially on the driver side of the engine. I replaced the VVT solenoid and changed the oil. It happens mostly while I'm coming off the freeway at temp or on cold starts. I keep seeing the "death rattle" all over however of I'm not mistaken the timing is on the passenger side of the engine right? I can't find a solution online. Any input helps.

Provided your clubman is left hand drive then yes, the timing chain is on the passenger side.

You can locate the source of any unusual noise by lightly pushing a screwdriver against different parts of the engine and placing an ear against the other end. If the noise is loud enough to not be drowned, you can try recording it and uploading it here.

You may also want to look around for a BMW/Mini compatible obd scanner. If you have an android phone I'd recommend either "Bimmer-tool lite" (easier to use) or "Deep OBD for BMW and VAG" (harder to get into, more powerful). Both are free of trackers (Deep-OBD is also open source) and will read errors from all ECU's and provide plain text descriptions for them.

Edit:
1. corrected statement about Bimmer-tool lite being open source
2. of course a compatible OBD adapter is also required for either app to work (either Bluetooth or, if your phone is OTG capable, USB)
