2008 r56 hatchback not starting

Hey all,
let me start by saying I’m a newbie to the mini world and I know what I’m about to ask has been addressed multiple times so bare with me. I have a friend who bought a 2008 R56 not running. Timing chain tensioner went so we replaced the whole kit and kaboodle. Chain, tensioner, guides... you all know the routine. Now the problem is, is it won’t start. The car cranks, but not throwing a spark. I’m pretty seasoned mechanic as I’ve been working on vehicles since I was a kid so I triple checked to make sure timing was right. Started eliminating different things. Luckily as my friend bought this I bought a mini not long after him. Same gen. So I started swapping parts from mine to his. Nothing. I did find the starter was crapped out so swapped that with a new one. Still just crank and no start. I can smell fuel so know it’s getting that. The exhaust audibly makes noise so I know I’m getting compression and then put a gauge on to see as well. Followed all fuses and relays associated l and all were good. Battery produced the necessary voltage. Any ideas what it could be? My fear for him is that the DME is shorted. Also I did hand crank the motor which spins clean so I don’t think the valves are bent, but haven’t decided to tear down the heads to find out either. Any input is much appreciated.

I am not sure but if you are not getting spark did the small ground wire at the front of the valve cover get reconnected?

Yes when I reinstalled the valve cover that was the first thing I made sure of and made sure that the lead wasn’t broken any way. All as it should be.
