HPFP problem?

Hi all,

My understanding of hpfp failures is that it manifests as hard starts and sputtering indicating a failure.

What I have been seeing (well my kid who drives the car much more than me) is the half check engine light with loss of power sometime during a drive. This has now happened 4 or 5 times in the last 2 months. It happened to me once last year but in each case with the car sitting for a bit it’s gone away on restart except the last time where I cleared the code and checked pressure and got the expected 7MPa on idle with blips taking it above 8MPa. However, the frequency of codes seems to be increasing.

Car always starts and idles fine (so far).

Before I outlay a ridiculous $800+ for a new pump I want to be sure this is the issue and say not the low pressure pump or something else since the symptoms seem to be at odds with what’s normally seen. Low pressure pump is 72.5psi.

Could there be gunk in the tank blocking fuel flow?

The car is 4 months past the 10 year mark and has 64k miles

Code is 2C01

I have searched the forum but have not come across this type of issue for hpfp.

cheers

The low pressure of ~70psi seems normal... The check for that code is to verify low side pressure with an external gauge. If low pressure is in spec, then replace the high pressure pump.

The first two HPFP failures on my 2011 MCS had the common symptoms, hard starting, sputter then die when trying to start, etc. IIRC, the first HPFP was covered under the Hendricks warranty I purchased when I bought my MINI used, and the second was covered under the factory extension. The most recent HPFP failure (at around 122k miles, and just over 10 years....think they only cover that once, anyway) started with the check engine light, reduced power (no turbo), and my ScanGuage2 showing code P0015, which is a VANOS code. I would stop, clear the code, and continue on. But the driving time between episodes of P0015 appearing started to get ridiculously short, and then P0087 started showing up as well, which is a fuel pressure code. Hoping it wasn't the HPFP again, and knowing the LPFP was original, I replaced the LPFP and the fuel filter more as maintenance....or a guess, LOL. That didn't help any, unfortunately. I then bought a scan tool (an AUTEL MaxiCheck MX808 from my Cornwell tool dealer) that shows BMW/MINI info, and got the 2C01 code, which IIRC was HPFP pressure low. I then monitored high- and low-pressure fuel pumps with the scan tool, and the low pressure was stable at around 82 PSI, but the high pressure was dropping from 1800-2000 PSI or so to 200 PSI or less when accelerating hard, accompanied by backfires, missing, stumbling, sometimes black smoke, and the 2C01 code popping up. I replaced my HPFP with a MINI Genuine, no further issues for 4 weeks now. Car runs great again. I managed to find a new MINI Genuine HPFP #13 51 7 592 429 for $598.50 (plus tax) from a company called Good Better Best Auto Parts (all one word) on eBay. It came in a BMW Group box, and was sealed in the factory plastic bag, so it was/is a legit new factory part. Good luck, and please keep us posted. (And if you look in the "R56 Hatch Talk" category, you will find my post from 3/12/21 titled "HPFP failure?")

This is crazy how often these fail. I had mine replaced under my 3rd party warranty at 79K. Now at 125K it is giving all the failure symptoms. Do you have the web link to the part by any chance? That is a pretty good deal, it is absolutely insane what they are charging for this part. Thanks

It is eBay auction number 274291937260, enter that number in "search" on eBay and it will come up. Says they have more than 10 available. Seller name is goodbetterbestautoparts. Price is $598.50.

Update,

I reached out to MINI USA to see if I could still take advantage of the extended warranty but that's a no go. I miss out by 4 months. Perhaps if I'd bought it new and spent 100% of the price on dealership maintenance...

It is particularly galling to see hundreds of near identical pumps for the N14 engine on eBay for $100-150 (I know, they're probably crap quality but if you got a year out of one...).

My dilemma is now:
a) wait until a more reasonably priced PSA version arrives at one of our sponsors
b) get a refurbished one from the facebook person: https://hpfp-mini-cooper-rebuilt.com/sale
c) buy the one from eBay mentioned on this thread.

My son reports that the frequency of the half-check engine light is increasing, but still tends to go away on restarting. Cold starts in the morning have no issues and there have been no mis-fires or other problems that some report. I haven't found signs of oil leaking from the pump. I'm still wondering if pump failure is really the problem.

For real time data monitoring can something like a Scangauge II do this or one of the OBD dongles and a phone app? I have the Schwaben scan tool but have only monitored pressure briefly while idling. It would be awkward to try monitoring while on the move with the Schwaben.

cheers

Thank you for this info on the rebuild! I was not aware of it and was planning very soon to go with the ebay OEM. I think now I will go this route.
Yes it is a very disappointing situation. I contacted Mini and missed out on the warranty by a hair as well. I had my daughter's second HPFP replaced 60K ago, but I was advised the actual miles on the car not the pump. That does not make sense to me but okay whatever

Pulled this from another thread, cost to ship to USA is $350.00, I am leaning towards this route for brand new
Genuine Mini High Pressure Fuel Pump N14 13517588879 | 13517588879 | Neo Brothers

Thanks, but this is the one us early N18 folk need
https://www.neobrothers.co.uk/car-pa...18-13517592429
Cost excluding VAT is 325 pounds which is about $US460.

You said cost to ship to USA is $350 or do you mean that cost including shipping was $350? I saw the earlier thread a while back but last time I checked Neo Brothers out the price was really high. I was leaning towards the PSA pump from our site sponsor, which is supposedly available from today... and now it has jumped to late July. Darnnit!

However, my son has been driving quite a bit and hasn't reported an issue for over 3 weeks so I'm still puzzled by the cause here.

I've been meaning to get one of these OBD MX+ OBD dongles to allow realtime monitoring, but am procrastinating - too many choices in this space.

cheers

I use the OBD MX+ dongle and love it. I also have the Bimmer Link and Bimmer Code on my phone.

If you proceed further with checkout the total for N18 is $421.00. Yes about $350 for N14. I am using Carly software (for multiple cars) and will purchase their adapter which happens to be a little less. I have heard good things about the OBX MX as well.

Good to hear you're back in action. We haven't seen a 2C01 code for quite a while now, probably ~3000 miles, so again puzzled as to what caused it. Seeing some Vanos solenoid codes though so while I bought a spare, might look into cleaning them first. Barry just hit 68k miles so will need an oil change very soon - my son is using it to commute and is being sent all over the place to job sites so that's piling miles on.

I finally got the OBD MX+ dongle but will need to play with it some more and while it connected straight away with my phone it didn't seem to want to pair with my son's and I want him to be able to monitor fuel pressure in real time and also coolant temps.

cheers
