Removing oil filter housing

OK. I'm about to tackle the PITA task of replacing the gasket on my '04 S oil filter housing. What's everyone's view on removing the exhaust manifold first to facilitate access to the filter housing? Necessary? Good idea or bad?

I didn't remove the exhaust manifold when removing the oil filter housing. Major PITA. I can't say if it's easier with the manifold out of the way but it certainly can't be any more difficult.

I also did not remove the exhaust manifold to remove the oil filter housing.

To be fair, my car was on a lift and I have a nice selection of extensions, swivel sockets, ratchets and power tools in my toolbox.

You can access from the top. Hard to see so you gotta feel for the bolt heads. I can confirm the exhaust manifold can stay in place.
