Changing Belt on MCS with 15% pulley

Are there detail instrctions on how to change the timeing belt somewhere on here? I searched but no luck. Also what is the part number for the belt for a 03 MCS with 15% pulley?

I have 27K miles on my 15% pulley and the belt looks a bit worn.

Thanks in advanced!

Do you want to change to a new stock belt or a different belt altogether? There is no need for a new belt with the 15% as the stock works just fine. If the belt is worn you should be able to get that covered under your maintanence, if your SA tells you that he can't because of the pulley tell him he is full of you know what and that the pulley should not be adding any stress to the stock belt considering it is smaller!

As far as changing it, it goes along with the same type of instructions for removing the pulley since you have to remove the belt first to get the pulley off. Now what I don't know is if you can do it and avoid actually lifting the engine out.

Good luck with that one. Smaller pulleys DO wear the belt out faster so MINI could (and maybe should) deny replacing one on an aftermarket pulley.

I am curoius what your reasoning behind why MINI dealers should deny the replacement of the belt?

I know I am not up on the mechanics of the car as many of the people here on NAM are but considering the tensioning adjustment there is not reason the 15% pulley is adding any additional wear on the belt vs. the stock belt.

I look forward to any responses on this.

Me too......

What proof do you have, greatgro, that the stock belt will wear out faster with a 15% pulley?

One thing to verify on the pulley is the positioning. Make sure the pulley has been put on absolutely plumb, and you should have no additional wear.

Wenzor.....who put the pulley on? They should be able to verify the installation.

My pulley was put in correctly. A local guy did it, very good work. I just wanted to change the belt myself to gain a little more insight on my car. I have 37K miles on the car and 27K miles with the pulley, so i believe that the belt has had a full life

Thanks guys

Hey Wenzor,
OK, just a note to start with, this is not a "timing" belt.

To remove and replace the belt, you should really buy this tool
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=90880118410 This can be had at your Mini dealer, or from some suppliers here on line.
It is used to release tension on the belt tensioner. It can be done without it, but it's a huge pain in the A.

Once you have this tool, the job is quite easy. You may need to jack up the car to get to the crank pulley and AC pulley. Just make sure you scetch out how the belt runs through the pulleys before you remove it.

I don't have proof - but it's spinning faster more often, no? Add to that there is a smaller contact area b/c the pulley is smaller. So there is more stress (spinning faster) concentrated on a smaller area.

If a supercharger will wear out faster, than the belt will too, no? Who knows HOW much faster it will wear, but my common-sense guess is it WILL wear out somewhat faster.

NO, not really. The belt is not going any faster where as the blower is. Not a whole lot of difference as far as the belt / pulley goes, just that there is slightly less surface area contact between the two.
I would doubt that there is any more wear on the belt with a 15% pulley.
