Does your steering hydrolic sound like a sewing machine in heat as well?

As much as I like my Mini Cooper, I still can't get used to this hissing noise of the hydrolic every time I only look at the steering wheel (don't even have to touch it).

Isn't there anything that can be done to stop it, other than leaving her in the garage?

Well, it kinda is a sewing machine. In the MINI, the steering pump is electric, so that's why you get the noise (especially at low speed). It's completely normal. Hope that makes you feel better

The noise is normal because the steering instead of having an hydraulic actuated steering pump, it is electric, hence the sound.

I think it's kind of cool! I used to be in your shoes until I found out it's normal. I now find myself turning the steering wheel just to hear it.

I don't know why, but I like the sound too and have also been assured it's completely normal. It is a separate "motor" I believe, which is atypical of most any car.

I echo everything that you have stated, my miniac friend. I like the sound quite a bit myself. If the MINI's steering must have a sound, it might as well be a sound that disorients and confuses people who know not whence it comes. It's interesting how "annoying" noises can become enjoyable just by obtaining the ability to understand and explain them, as opposed to feeling like an *** because of them (as in "yes, I hear that screeching too, and I do know that it could easily be eliminated by bringing my car to a garage to have belts tightened since I cannot perform such a task myself, but I'm going to pretend not to observe your displeasure and contempt"

NYIllustrator,

That's funny!

BTW, didn't someone want you switching to a Honda (or somesuch) when you were experiencing problmes? How is the car now? I think I remember you getting the CVT fixed, but didn't you have stalling porblems?
