Got 240 miles on 05' MSC, and I get about 17.5mpg. Is that too low?

At 4500' elevation, with a new MCS, I've filled up 5 times. I drive about 30 miles a day, mixed town and highway, with no stop and go traffic. The first time I got 19 miles per gallon, I decided to drive conservatively and try to stay below 3000 RPM and I got 21 miles per gallon for the next three tanks. The last tank I decided to have fun and got 19 miles per gallon. So 10% gas savings by driving conservatively. Not worth it. Let'er REV!

I am getting improved mileage but still short of the advertised 27 and 32. By utlizing the computer and driving at minimal throttle and shifting early (aka no fun) have have gotten around 24 mpg in city. This past weekend did some long highway runs, DC to Philly and was getting upper 20's but due to some traffic. I think with clear running I may have been able to top 30.
Cruise control seemed to be the best way to get high mileage. Otherwise, my right foot would get too heavy and scew up the numbers :D
Overall, I think the mileage is getting better as the car is breaking in. Just went over 2700 miles. I don't know what person was able to get 27 and 32 on a consistent basis with a Cooper S.
Not that I bought this car for the fuel economy but it is close to the fuel economy of my thirsty VR6, which seems odd for a supercharged 4 banger. Oh well, I know I do save gas by being able to take turns faster... less acceleration.

If I use cruise and baby it around towm I get better than posted milage. However I choose to drive very hard, and am getting about 23 city right now, and it is still rising - I'm very happy with that!
If you are that low I would suspect you are using less than 91 octane or have blended fuel.

I'm curious guys: when does your "low fuel" light come on? I have had it come after 10.2gallons used and I have had it NOT come on even after 11.0gallons used , same weekly commute. At this point, I am suspecting some dodgy gas stations in the area maybe incorrectly inflating those numbers on the pump, and that is skewing my manual mpg calculations, and of course robbing more of my money!

I have about 4000 mi on my '05 MCS, and mostly I've gotten 24-26 mpg driving around country roads (actual, not computer). Haven't seen much change since new. Recently, I just finished the first tank after the 15% pulley went on, and mpg was 27. Too soon to tell if this establishes a trend of slightly better mpg with the pulley.

Sudden mileage drop
My new MCS had been getting an average of 25mpg for the first 2,500 miles. It recently developed a "cold start" problem, which the dealer says is epidemid among Minis and BMWs recently (she blamed the quality of the gas, I use Shell premium). Then I had the dealer install the JCW air intake... Just filled up this morning and found that the mileage is now 17mpg. I can't believe this is within the "normal" range. What explains the sudden drop? Any ideas? If this continues for one more tankful I will ask the dealer to look into it. :impatient

Thanks.

I have an MCSC. First tank said 29.5 mpg, which seemed really good. Second tank was about 26mpg. I am driving highway and country roads, no stop-n-go city driving. However, I am constantly verying the speed and gears for breakin. On the freeway, if the speed limit is 65, I go up to 65, take my foot off the gas and go down to 60, then gas to 65, etc. Also, I shift between 5th and 6th quite often, and drive in the lower gear. So I'm not driving in a way to maximize mileage. I have also taken it up to 5000+ rpm a few times to help with ring seating. It has burned NO oil so far (about 900 miles).
I LOVE all of the gears on the car, except first. First gear is a bit pickey - I've died a couple of times from a complete stop (once when my wife was yelling at me because I was putting the top down in traffic, the light turned green, and the top had not finished going back). Maybe I'm just not used to it yet.
