Got 240 miles on 05' MSC, and I get about 17.5mpg. Is that too low?

Got 240 miles on 05' MSC, and I get about 17.5mpg. Is that too low?

I just filled up my 05' MCS for the first time (only got about 240 miles so far), and I've been getting 17.5 mpg. It seems low. Is it because the engine breaking in? I hope it improves!

Thanks.

It depends a lot on how you drive. I got about 24 on my first tank. I took it up to 4500 rpm on occasion to have some fun but basically just varied the rpms as advised.

I noticed that my S got very low mileage until I got about two thousand miles on it. Keep in mind that the car is new and you may be a little right foot happy.

I typically get 24-25mpg during city driving on my MC. 30+ while on the highway and my car just hit 10k miles.

Don't worry about the first tank, it may not have been completely full. Check your currect tank on the next fill I bet your mileage will have improved.

My first two tanks on my '05 have been 24 mpg, 3/4 street, 1/4 highway. I'm now driving the streets in 4th to keep the revs down but can't seem to avoid leadfooting it on the freeway.

I will get 27 mpg if I manage 35 mph on a tank of gas. That only happened once. Otherwise I get about 24 mpg.

Once your engine is broken-in, your mileage will improve. My '03 gets 24-28 mpg in the city, unless I'm in BIG gridlocked traffic. I get 31-36 mpg on the highway. I've even gotten up to 40 mpg a few times! Should be interesting to see how my gas mileage is now that I got v39.

I'm a very smooth driver and that makes a difference. I can rev it up with the best of them, but once I hit the highways, it's smooth-sailing!

I'm always baffled by these high mpg numbers. My 03 Cooper says a global average of 27.8(ish) and I know thats an "optimistic" number. I assume I'm getting right around 26mpg... on a Cooper. Thats pretty pathetic.

Even around town - a stock MCS should be getting above 22-ish, and more like 25+, brand new or not. The break-in period isn't that dramatic.

Your MINI is a lot different then mine then, and we live in the same area and drive essentially the same roads.

For my MINI
city mileage averages: 19-20 mpg
highway mileage averages: 30-31 mpg

I have never seen 40 mpg (at least not for a full tank).

If my mileage were only off for the city part I would chalk that up to the driver, but my highway mileage is pretty far off of yours too and there shouldn't be much lead footing playing into that.

05 MCS = 21 mpg (according to the computer on board)

I use a LOT of low gear, twisties and hills, hardly go the speed limit

I have about 3800 miles on my MCS. I usually drive pretty conservative, but do have 'fun' once in awhile. My driving is 99% in town with 55 - 65 mph on small stretches.
I started tracking my mileage on a web site I saw on this forum:
http://www.myautolog.com/
It says I'm averaging about 28.4 mpg so far. Haven't had it on a long drive of all freeway driving yet but will in May when we go back to Cinci from Orlando for a daughters wedding. Will be interested in seeing what we do with nothing but freeway driving.

The computer isn't 100% accurate. Mine reads consistently about 13% higher than what I compute by hand. It's easy to figure it out manually - just zero out your trip odometer at fillup - at the next fillup divide the miles on your trip odometer by the gallons it took for the fillup - then zero it out again for the next tankfull. I keep a book in the car and record it so I can see if there's a trend. V39 dropped by fuel economy by about 10% instantly, so now I'm getting 27-28 with a mix of city and highway driving. Before v39 it was 29-30. My best tank was 33mpg almost all highway. 40mpg? From a MCS???

My '05 MCS is getting about 27 MPG, according to the car's computer. It has about 1300 miles on it now and I didn't notice much of a change during the break-in period.

My wife gets usually around upper 30s on the highway, lower 30s in mixed driving. Of course, that's according to the trip computer - I'll need to check it with the odometer, but either way, it's using a LOT less gas than a Hummer!

She filled up a few days back at a truck stop on the way to Denver, cost her $24 to fill it - the guy in the Hummer at the next pump? Over $80. I think I'll get another Cooper!! Woohoo!!

Check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure will result in low mpg. Don't put it too high either or you risk busting up a tire. I was at Prestige the other day in NJ and this woman had a tire pressure of 70psi on one wheel, and 50 something on another!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, my mental math skills are suffering, I got my third fill-up today and did the math on paper. I'm getting 21 mpg, all three fill-ups.

('05 MCS, replaced runflats with lighter 16" wheels and 205/50/16 tires, K&N airfilter)

Well, last weekend I used 12 gallons in 120 miles...

course... that was because I was on a track

Usually I get around 24.

I'm averaging 30.5 mpg on my '05 MCS, as indicated by the computer.

Most of that mileage is highway, as my average speed is over 40 mph on the computer. I drove like a Saint during the break in period, and somewhat conservatively now. I enjoy romping on it occaisionally, but not all the time.

My MCS seems to like the way I drive. 3,000 miles and not one single problem.

It's a hell of a car.

Sounds like the same experience I had. I thought my first tank of gas went pretty fast too. Give it another 500 miles or so. You'll notice an improvement with each tank. Now that my car is broken in, I'd say I'm doing a bit over 30mpg now on my MCS in mixed traffic conditions driving.
