Need airbag diagnostic tool

Has anybody found an OBD II tool that will read the airbag fault codes an reset the light? Something in the $100 range?

Thank you...

...I called them and they don't know if it will work on the Mini. Has anybody actually used it with success?

If your MINI is still under warranty, have the dealer do this so that THEY will be accountable for a malfunctioning airbag.

My 2 cents anyway. . .

Thanks, but I'm well out of warranty at 75k. I have a long drive to the dealer and want to find out what the problem is before I make the trip. This light is a known problem area in the 02 and usually due to a bad/loose under seat connection.

Leon,

Thanks for the reply. That is actually a different tool. There are 2, one for the engine stuff and one for the SRS Airbag stuff. It is the latter I am inquiring about.

Airbag's are usually have a warranty of 5-10 years regardless of mileage. Take a look at your warranty pamplet that you got with your Mini Cooper. Honda offer's a lifetime warranty. I understand your far away but check it out.

Airbag Diagnostic Tool - Easy To Use

use the following easy to follow diagnostic routine to determine the problem with your MINI airbag(s).

1) If the airbag is hanging out of the steering wheel, seat, dashboard or headliner, your airbag has been deployed

2) If the airbag is wet, your windows or sunroof is probably open and it is raining

3) If the airbag is frozen, your automatic airconditioning is set too low

4) If the airbag light is on, you probably moved the driver or passenger seat and loosened the connection underneath. There is a TSB related to this problem -- my '02 MCS had each seat airbag harness replaced, but they only did it one seat at a time as it failed. They also replaced the exploding seat belt latch/tensioner *twice* on the same visit, as the 1st replacement part was defective.

This is a well known problem, and they should fix it even after the warranty has expired, on a good will basis if nothing else.

Don't expect that one of these tools will fix this situation - the SRS system will still report that there's a problem if the entire airbag / belt tensioner system is not intact. It's there for a reason, although it's not very forthcoming about why it is illuminated.

Go to the dealer and get the problem fixed. In a car as small as the MINI, do you really want to take a chance that it's not going to go off in an accident?

I'm pretty posistive it's the entire system. Don't bother calling the dealer. Refer to your warranty pamplet. For example On my Lexus IS300 There Bumper to Bumper is 4 Yr 50k. But all Emissions Items are 8 Years 80k When i my 02 sensor went bad they never told me about my 80k warranty until i look in my manual and saw this then they shut up and refunded my money. I'd offer to look but my cooper is En Route!!

Well, I ended up going to the dealer. It had reported a seat connection. No charge. He also wire tied things up a bit better.

I already had the components replaced mentioned earlier in this thread.
