Does anyone know what the weight of transaxle fluid is for the six speed manual, and how many quarts a change would be?

Not only do I believe in frequent engine oil changes during the break-in process, I like to change drivetrain lube several times prior to 10,000 miles.

I searched on this subject, and although there is a lot of talk about engine oil, I couldn't find a thing on the transaxle lube.

Thanks.

I will check our books at my shop but I don't know if we have anything current enough to have the MINI in it.

I remember most Getrags I have worked on taking various types of Automatic Transmission Fluid but many times they are special part numbers. I don' tknow if these special fluids are really all that special though.

Here is an interesting article about the Getrags in Pontiac Fieros. Not sure how much of it applies to the new Getrag but worth reading for the knowledge.

Amsoil Synthetic ATF or Synthetic Gear Oil is supposed to meet pretty much every transmisson specification on earth so contacting and Amsoil dearl as well as the dealership might be an option.

I had an 87 Fiero GT and loved it. Like the S all it
needed was another 100 horsepower.
I think checking with the dealer sounds like the
way to go. I couldn't find anything either.

I did a little pokin' around on this subject. Mini calls for Texaco MTF 94. My Mini dealer had it in a 25 litre barrel but would sell it by the litre @ $15/per. The Getrag box is a 2 litre fill.

I couldn't find anything on the Texaco/Caltex website but did find a couple of mentions of MTF 94 in Land Rover gear boxes. Texaco MTF 94 is apparently a synthetic lube and the posts crossed it with Redline MTL, which I believe is a 75W/80 synthetic. Oh, yeah. MTL goes for about $8 per quart.

That's the direction I'm going - just waiting for my supplier to restock.

Good luck.

the transmission/transaxle holds just under 2 qts. i replaced my juice with Redline MTL 90, pretty easy to access from under the car; one plug to drain, another to fill. I used a funnel with a long hose to pour from the engine compartment area into the filler hole until it just overlows from the filler hole.

jlm, yeah I found the capacity index in the back of the owners manual, and you're right about the amount of oil.

Boilermaker, that is good info. I did the sniff test, and the lube does smell more like gear lube, than motor oil like some trans, and definintely didn't smell like ATF, so I am guessing you might have the hot info. It would be nice to see it in writing somewhere though. I will most likely confir with my dealer prior to the change, and then replace with my favorite synthetic lube.

Thanks for all the help.

Cheers.
