First gear backfire and SES

Hi all, I have an 03 MCS with a 15% pulley, Milltek catback, and Alta intake. The SES light has been going on intermitently and I'm getting a little concerned. It will be on for a few runs, then turn off for a few, then come on again. The first time this happend I took it into the dealer and it had turned itself off when they tried to diagnose it. Their conclusion was that the mods were causing the knock sensor to trip and that I needed to upgrade my ECU.

Aside from a squeeling noise when the engine is very cold, I've also noticed that when starting off in first gear, after starting the engine there is 1 backfire. It doesn't happen in any other gear, and it only happens once. I'm getting a little worried there's something seriously wrong with the car, but the dealer won't check it without charging me because of the mods. Any suggestions? Thanks

-Marc

Hi Marc

Good luck with your dealer. I suggest getting the ECU re-tuned. I hope your dealer doesn't try to attribute everything to your mods and refuse warranty work as they did in my case. Even down to rear wheel bearing failure, cracked windshield, creaking rear hatch and squeaky brakes, they refused to cover it under warranty. They said the mods had voided their responsibility.

PM Me, I can give you the contact info for the main Mini Warranty field inspector who may be able to help you.

reference Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act that specifically states that the only way a dealer can not honor any warranty for work on the car is if THEY can PROVE that the mods you have DIRECTLY caused the problem. If it did not or they can't prove it, then the warranty should cover the expenses.

Cheers
