squeaky clutch pedal

squeaky clutch pedal

Hi,

Anyone ever have a problem with a squeaky clutch pedal - everytime I press / depress the clutch pedal it makes a squeaky noise like the pedal needs lubricant? ?Any ideas or can I ignore this?

Mine does it. Can't tell you if its normal.

squeaky clultch pedal

I had what I would call a moan when I let my clutch back out. Took it to the dealer for a look see. It took a couple of days to get it to do it for them (figures) and they replaced the clutch, flywheel, etc. Might get it checked out....

Mine seems to be doing this now as well (the moan when you let out). Hopefully, they'll replace some stuff on my car as well to fix it while it's still under warranty.

I have the same problem along with some other ones. I am about to take it apart this weekend. I'll let you know what I find. I think it has something to do with the release bearing rubbing. It is mostly plastic, so it doesn't suprise me. I don't know if it is necessary to replace the flywheel if the car is making that noise. I hope you didn't pay too much for that HtStf5.

If it is just noise, then I wouldn't worry too much. If it starts feeling different, like rubber on rubber feeling, then have it looked at.

I'll keep you guys informed on what I find.

I had the same noise but thought it was normal. I figured that's what a metal spring sounds like when you compress it...it squeaks. That's not what the dealer thinks though...they just told me to replace the clutch. And BTW, it's not under warranty. Has anybody had a clutch replaced under warranty in this type of situation? I'm a bit curious why the dealer is saying it's not under warranty.

If it is the pivot point for the clutch pedal under the dash, this easily comes apart, you can grease it and put it back and you are done.

Unfortunately, I had the same problem starting from 9,000 miles and it got progressively worse. It does feel like there is a resistance-rubbing feeling and audible scrunch sound to the clutch pedal when depressed. At 10,800 miles it was worse to the point where my clutch began slipping when doing quick sprints/gear changes since the release bearing wasn't acting quick enough to engage the clutch all the way. It is most likely your release bearing (plastic crappola) within your clutch that is beginning to seize onto the input shaft/sleeve....and is struggling to move on said shaft when pushed/moved by the release lever fork.

BTW & FYI, our clutch pedal should feel 'Honda' light and smooth...if you can believe that. Mines is now.

ChiliWORKs, thanks for your post. My dealer lubricated the clutch pedal, bled the system, and even replaced the master cylinder...and my "crunchy" clutch persists. Much reading had led me to suspect a faulty slave cylinder (which was also replaced once previously) or the release bearing. Now I'm 99.8% sure it is the release bearing...and I'm heading in for service next week. The car just isn't any fun to drive when the clutch feels like this!

Yeah me too, I've always wondered what it was but never really looked into it I always thought it was just the clutch pedal rubbing against something plastic but the noise will stop for a couple of days then come back, so should I have it checked plus I got a new clutch about 2000 miles ago.

No problem, hope it helps. I also could've sworn it was the clutch pedal that needed lubrication since that's exactly where I felt it. But, now I realize the seized bearing scrunching its way along the input shaft/sleeve is harsh enough to transmit that vibration along the hydraulic system.

Mines did the exact same thing...off and on noise/vibration at random times (but got more so in the end). Luckily, it made enough of a ruckus during my service checkup for the MINI Lead Tech to track it down to inside the tranny. Double check your previous clutch paperwork and see if they did change this piece. I'm not sure if this bearing is included in the MINI clutch kit.

ive had my clutch replaced for the same issue and it still persists. what bushing are you talking about. the ones on the clutch fork? #5,6 ??

If you're asking me....my answer is no. The release bearing which looks like this


is not shown in this OEM diagram (below). The bearing slides along the sleeve shown as #1 in the diagram (your hotlink pic doesn't show up...I will hotlink from my post).

The release bearing is included in the oem clutch kit. ive had my clutched changed and the noise was still there.

Interesting thread. I just noticed my clutch had a weird rubber not sliding right in a tube feel about 200 miles ago. I'm at almost 14000 miles.

I thought it felt like the clutch pedal needed some lube.
....might be something else altogether looks like eh?

Im in the same boat right now. I even took mine in to Towne MINI. They ASSURED me that it was totally normal to have a squeek coming from my clutch. As long as its not binding. (which it is starting to bind.) A 45 minute drive for the service advisor to tell me nothing is wrong with my car when i know that there is and one of the BMW techs told me that there was too. He said that the slave cylinder is making noise. Someone please tell me that no noise is supposed to be coming from here.

Im planning on going back out to Buffalo in two weeks (summer vacation yay!) and making them fix it before i blow blood vessel.

Mine does it on and off and doesn't seem to affect the functionality of the clutch at all.

Wow, 45mins?...and with a service advisor too huh. I took mines out for 15mins with the shop foreman and it was a done deal. How about taking it to another dealer?

Sucks that a $70 part takes 4-5 hours to replace...that's why I guess they tend to replace the whole clutch kit in these cases...like mines.

Right now I have no sound coming from anywhere except for the faint click of the neutral-start safety switch when I depress the clutch pedal on ignition.

Whats $70 and if its the slave your talking about , it def doesnt take 4hrs....maybe 30-60mins including bleeding the system.

I found out what caused the problems with my clutch, it was the fork that operates the clutch. It is bent and I think it is what was causing the rubbing sound. I think the bearing is getting uneven pressures causing it to rub at an angle. I think that is what causes the sound and actual rubbing. If you do get this rubbing feeling (not just the sound) it may lead to the bearing separating from the pressure plate...leaving you screwed on the side of the road.

BTW...I thought it came from the slave cylinder also. It sounds like it comes from it, and if it feels like it is rubbing, it feels like it comes from the slave cylinder. I found out after replacing the slave cylinder that it is coming from inside of the bellhousing. It can be deceiving.

It sucks that the part only costs like $30 at discound auto parts and it only took me 1 hour to change it. You would think that MINI specialists could do it faster...

It would be cool if you could do a writeup on how you turned this job around in an hour. Then we'd all be in a less 'sucky' situation...post warranty.

Are we talking about the same part? I'm talking about a slave cylinder. I'm not sure if you're talking about that or the release bearing. If it's the release bearing, then...I guess 4 or 5 hours is not too bad. It can probably be done in 3 if you know what you're doing.

so it wasnt teh slave cylinder and just the fork? i guess im gonna change the fork then and my clutch at the sametime since its not doing so well. a nice ACT will do the trick

I had the sticky/binding/rubbery/crunchy clutch pedal, as discussed in a previous post. In my case, the slave cylinder had nothing to do with it (although it was replaced upon failure long ago). The dealer tried bleeding the system, lubricating the clutch pedal, and even replacing the master cylinder without solving the problem. ChiliWORKs alerted me to the release bearing as a potential culprit, and I headed back to the dealer. I had already planned to have the flywheel replaced under the TSB, so I asked them to look at the clutch while they had everything apart. They replaced the clutch, and wow...what a difference! The clutch pedal is extremely light and very smooth. I just have to be gentle for the next 1K miles...
