It stinks on a 25 grand subcompact to have this shreeking noise when you drive. There is nothing you can do to the A/C controls or rolling down windows that will stop it.
you know MLEs mini was making a quite version of this the other day...I didn't even think about it...all I did was turn off the resirculation setting on the AC and it stoped...

Considering the sound comes up at excessie speeds, I am not sure I want the dealer testing it

The best way I've found to "eliminate" the sound is to turn up the radio.

Today, after owning my MINI since May 03, I heard this noise. I was running about 50mph and a crosswind, remnants of the hurricane, hit my car and I heard the whine/air sound. It came and went a few times on my way to work. I've been in the same situation several times over the last two years and never heard it before today. My vents/re-circ setting changed nothing no matter the settings.

There has only been one change on my car in the last week. I have an 03 and the foam under the cowl vents was worn so I went to have it replaced under warranty. Instead of replacing the foam, they replaced the vents with the 04 and newer style vent. Could this be the reason? How many here have heard this sound and have the older style cowl vent.

Maybe you could take the vent off or do something and try a test run.

My car has the same thing. I only get it aroung 110. I first thought it was the wiper blade. Took the blade off and it was still there. I think it is the vent.

Another method to try an eliminate it would be to start taping over things. Cover the vent so it is completly covered and no air can get in it. If the sound is gone there is your problem, if it is still there then move on and tape something else. If I wasn't so lazy or maybe if that noise bothered me I would try this.

I just got my car back. The dealer replaced the heater box to fix the recirc-whistle that so many have experienced. That seems to have been a success, but I got the choo-choo like noise (just like in the vid) @ ~ 95 again today. Tried fooling with the AC & wipers but neither seemed to have an effect. I wonder If it could be the seal under the A-pillar vibrating. I'm gonna pull my A-pillar cover & take a look.

Good foam earplugs, always works on the MOTO, god knows wind blows all around my head at 80mph+on those things. I think the MINI will spoil me and have a overall detrimental effect on my "roughing it" gene

Found It!

In my case, it's the sunroof. If i vent it even slightly, the noise stops immediately. Closing it brings it back. One of those tacky deflectors would likely fix it, but I think I'll let it ride & just keep it under a hundred.
