Transmission rattle
I just made the BIG jump from an '03 CVT to an '05 MCS JCW that I picked up used. ( )
With clutch out and sitting still, I am getting some transmisison rattle - is this common? I did a search and didn't some up with anything...
FWIW, I understand that this can happen with a lightened flywheel, BUT I have no way of knowing if that's what's in there....
Thanks
Derek

My '05 MCSC does the same thing. It gets louder after
the car has some time to warm up. It annoyed me when
I first got the car, but now I'm used to it.
One thing that really gets at me with my MINI is that the
shifter vibrates at moderate to hard acceleration. It
usually happens at around 5000rpm, but is intermittent.
I had the dealer take a look at it, but they said it was
normal. At least I have it documented with them. Does
anyone else have this problem with their '05?

I think there's some truth that they all do that, but can't if they SHOULD all do that.
Mine started at 1100 miles, mentioned it to my SA who right away said flywheel bring it in.. I did, they replaced the flywheel and clutch.. no rattle in the 13,000+ miles since.
I don't think it's a critical issue to worry about... but I didn't like my new car's tranny ratteling before the break-in was done..

Hmmm
Maybe I'll make a list and have my MINI dealer look at it. This car is way past break in at 17k miles.
From my gearhead past, I could understdn how broken reaction springs in a clutch plate might cause some chatter in the drivetrain. So would some slop in transmission mainshaft brearings etc...
'Just wondering if it was common.
Thanks

Lots of threads on this topic!!
Including...

I have never received a consistent answer from this forum or from my dealer if the tapping noise is really "normal" and like most of the previous posters, I am just documenting it and continuing happily on!!
