Water + Battery = Not Good

Water + Battery = Not Good
This past Friday a friend was installing my CAI and in order to get it installed we had to remove the wiring for the rally lights to take off the rear partition. When he tried removing the wire it caused sparks, so I suggested to disconnect the battery. We lift the boot to get to the battery when we notice that there's a 1/4 inch of water sitting around it. The battery was in the green zone, and when we finally reconnected it, it still worked so that wasn't a problem.
But I've done a search on here and I couldn't find any answers so I was wondering what may the cause of it. We thought about it just being the condensation from it being warm in the car and cold outside. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be really worried and if so, what do I need to do to prevent this?
Thanks

Thanks Paul. Where could I get a new gasket or is that only at the dealer?

i had a similar experience once, only it was something else in my battery well....lets call it "lemonade"......i could smell it spilling in the boot from the driver's seat. So i got out to start cleaning it and i freaked out when i realized that the battery was in the trunk and started throwing things on the ground to get to the battery, but no damage was done. Good luck fixin that seal.

My '05 Mini S with sunroof is currently in the shop with the water in the battery box problem. Currently the cause has not been discovered, however, I had to replace the BST cables and the fuse assemby located in the box. This is rather expensive. Please refer to NAM posts March '09 concerning this matter.
