I had the same question about the Kingsborne wires...what the difference between the 8mm, 8.5mm & 9mm? So I called Kingsborne directly and spoke to a very friendly guy who gave me a very thorough and technical explanation, much of which I didn't understand. But here's what was clear, Kingsborne doesn't make 9mm wires anymore. This is b/c the only rubber boots that are available are designed for 8mm wires and need to be stretched to accomodate the extra size. They have found that this reduces the life and durability of the wires. Also, the 9mm came around b/c people think that bigger is always better, so wire manufacturers started using more insullation (or something) which is actually the least expensive part of the plug. He also spoke about wanting to have the ideal level of ohms and that the 8mm wires were the perfect size for the MINI. He even said that whatever wires I decide to go with, even if they're not Kingsborne, make sure that the ohms level is close to their's and that the wires are not 9mm. I hope this helps.
Kingsbourne used to make so much great stuff for British cars. Air filters, cables, adapters, etc. When the kids took over the business, they almost ruined it, and are now only doing wires. Ah well, old fart remembering the good old days.
