Air Bag Warning Light / Extended Warranty

I just received a letter and sticker from MINI USA stating my 02 MCS is now covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles for the Air Bag Warning Light problem so many have had on the early year MINIs.

The letter states if the warning light comes on other than under normal situations, MINI will cover and repair everything at their expense. The sticker I received is to be entered in to my service book and the letter is for reference to their promise of service.

Has anyone else received one of these letters?

No I haven't. What build date is your MINI?

We did experience problems with the airbag light 2 years ago coming back on a road trip to SC in the '02 MC. It was taken care of by the dealer under warranty and we haven't had any issues since.

I got mine today as well.. However, I sold the '02 a year ago. Previous to the sale I had both seat wiring harnesses repaired/replaced for this problem, so hopefully the new owner won't have to utilize this new warranty.

Thanks!

Mine's a January '03 build. Apparently if the air bag light illumunates for no reason there's a problem, and the car should be taken in immediately. I've not had this problem. Seems a connection partially loosens in the harness (for side air bags and safety belt pretensioner) and trips the air bag light. Warranty is being extended in this case.

The 10 year / 150,000 mile warranty is FREE. But it's for the light or electrical problems dealing with it only.

OK, I also have a '02 Aug build, so I assume I will be receiving the letter sometime next week. Thanks for the heads up.

Dec. 02 build (03 MY) and I got my letter yesterday... Leif dropped it in front of me, joking that I had another recall

Polizei... the warranty is only extended in the case of this particlar problem, should it ever arise.

I got mine 2 days ago for my Mar.'02 build. My airbag light has gone off more than a half dozen times, but I didn't want to lemon law it.
Finally, they just soldered everything in place about a year ago, and it hasn't come on since.

I'm glad I read this thread! I got this in the mail and just assumed it was for my '05, but I just looked again, and the VIN number is indeed for my departed '03. I suppose I'll put it in the mail to the new owner.

Sorry everyone!

Sorry to bring back a very old post...

but I bought a 03 MC used and I was wondering how could I get a hold of this letter...I am having this silly airbag harness problems, and the dealer that I went to fixed it once (I didn't have to pay for it) and the problem reoccurred a few months ago, tried to fix it by hard wiring it under my drivers seat and that didn't work (again I didn't have to pay for the service) and now they are telling me that it's going to cost me $600 out of my own pocket to fix it :|

I'm not sure if anyone has an answer, but it would be great if someone could help me out

Thanks!

I'm glad you brought this thread back up. I hadn't seen it before. I bought an '02 a couple years ago. The airbag light just came on. Now I know I can get it fixed for free.

Go to another dealer and play dumb? Don't know if they put it in the database that it has been fixed. I would think any and all work the dealer does is covered for two years, call mini usa.

I've got an 05 MCS and the red light up top and yellow on the speedo are on, have been since I got the car. Looks like mine was made August of 2005, anyone with same year/problem know if MINI ended up covering this issue or not? Or am I just going to have to take it to MINI to find out?

Mine went off tonight, I'm most likely SOL due to purchasing a salvage titled R53 back in 2009.
