Sooo, still needing to find a better option than $550 for a rebuilt pump, myself.

My Power steering is still working but it makes a whirring noise when I turn the wheel - sorta sounds electronic. Is this normal or is it not supposed to make any noise? this is my first mini and I've only had it for 1 day so far. Nothing is leaking as far as I know and the fan does not stay on.

they sell rebuilt ones for $400. I sent mine in and it was $200 to rebuild it if it's fixable.

I'm afraid that is what got me into trouble to start with...

My pump was maybe loud (still working not running all the time), so I removed it (for other work on the car) and bought BBA's reman service on eBay. The told me that new brushes, included in the rebuild, should reduce the noise.

The problem is that it was damaged in shipping. BBA's pricing did not include shipping insurance. They tell me the damage is not repairable. So, now I have no pump.

Yea, a reman from them is $400, but they require a core trade in that is rebuildable. Since they say mine is not, they want to charge me an additional $150. So, my total cost would be $550 plus shipping. Grrr.

If I'm gonna spend that much, I'd rather buy a new pump that has the design improvement that makes the pump quieter (so I have read).

So, if anybody has the hot ticket to where the lowest price for a new pump, without having to send in a core, I would love to hear some ideas, I need to order a pump soon.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was told that if I wanted insurance it would be a few $'s more and covers up to $500. I didn't take it but after hearing your story will for any part such as this.

Thanks. Yea, it wasn't so obvious with their eBay auction, at least not to me. I'm sure if you called them they would do a better job of pointing out you have to pay extra for insurance.

Even though I was **** about packing, it still broke. Looks like the electrical connector is a week link.

Has anyone used BBA-Reman to rebuild there power steering pump? I am looking for a review. Ship time, build quality, how long it lasted?

Hello, I just used them about two weeks ago for my '03 MCS. I sent them my power steering pump next day shipment. They received it on Friday and I got it back on Wednesday. The pump is working so far with out a problem. I would pay for insurance when shipping because I hear horror stories of the contacts breaking in shipping.

Why would that be? Did they use different gears or fluid viscosity?

dont know why it's heavier . as to whether they can help continuous running i guess it depends on why it keeps running . that may be external . look at spontanious engine bay fires . i thought the pump was responcible for them .

Mine would run after engine was shut off which caused the battery to drain. From reading other post on this forum they said that is a good indicator that it can be rebuilt. I received mine and have had it for about 2 weeks with no issues as of yet. But as everything minI my driver's side window works intermittently. So much for taking a break from fixing things

I can help with the first question. That is the power steering reserve, but you should know that the power steering pump has its own electric motor that is supposed to whine when you turn even a little. Maybe check out someone else's MINI before you change out the fluid, which is supposed to be dark, by the way.

If the power steering is getting noticeably louder, that is generally a sign your pump is starting to go. I would not bother changing the fluid before that, the proper fluid is Pentosin CHF 11. It is rather expensive as far as ps fluid is concerned.

I've never changed that bulb before, I would imagine it is replaceable. I'll have to check my manual but it would seem that the bulb is a matter of removing the down tubes (which u can find a diy here) pulling out the climate control, and replacing the bulb i the back.

Is there a way to disconnect the power steering full-time? I got an intermittent pump that also likes to kill the battery on occasion. Is there a fuse (or something else) that I can pull to bypass the section?

Thanks in advance

Compare it to another MINI. If it is way louder with the same amount of steering input, something is wrong. I believe the fluid is supposed to be on the dark side.

Yes, fluid will be dark. Don't waste your money. Start saving your pennies if it is THAT loud, there is a new ps pump in your future..

i think the fluid is suppose to have a purple color to it...put some on your finger and look at it...don't look in that reservoir because anything will preety much look black if the reservoir is black...good luck
