Installing Cruise if you dont have it stock

Hello all.

I searched for a thread on this and only saw one and there were only two responses.

I asked the dealer today if they could install cruise on my 2004 S with the JCW package. they quoted me over 4K. Sort of ridiculous.

Does anybody have any experience with this...or had it done?

Thanks

Most people report back quotes ranging from 'impossible' to $1500.
Ridiculous in any case.

If you can provide me with more information, I would really appreaciate it. Like part #s or even the dealer that is going to do it for you. NOBODY knows what I am talking about. Everything from 5K to cant be done.

I would do mine tomorrow if it was $400.

Look on motoringfile for the DIY instructions. It'll be the MINI .pdf file.

Not sure this is the right one, but:

http://motoringfile.com/howto/MFSW.PDF

and a page with a list of misc. instructions.
http://motoringfile.com/diy

This may just be me, but the instructions to install the MF steering wheel appear to be pretty complex, with the 3.5 hours, it appears that it may be more than $400.

This may just be me, but it also looks like something best left to the dealer to do - unless you are very good with automotive wireing.

Still need help. Been to the link....searched all the DYI files. Saw one for the multi-funtion steering wheel....is that it.

I could find nothing on retrofitting cruise.

Could you point me to the link...or be more specific. I have been looking for an hour...

That's the one you need to read and study. I apologize about the cryptic message previously. I should have avoided jargon and spelled out the meaning and provided a link.

It's an involved precedure, but not insurmountable. I used one of those .pdf files to retrofit heated seats in a friend's 04 MCS. I used another one to install driving lights onto an 06 MCSa.

I agree and would be willing to spend $800 to do it...but my dealer here in Buffalo tells me it is $4000 (Yes..you read right $4K) to do it and they never have..geesh I wonder why.

I cannot find anyone else to do it. Does anyone know of a dealer that will do it...if it is within a 1 day drive...I would consider traveling to get it done.

And does any one know of a junk yard that deals in minis..and or another source for the Multi Func. Steering wheel?

MFSW is cruise.
When you get the MFSW, you get cruise and stereo controls.

The kit from Classic is just over $400 for parts.

I dont need anyone to install things for me.

I assume that Classic is your local Mini Dealer?

Where are they located? My dealer will not do it.

Thanks for the parts numbers. That should help a lot.

I dont think I am good enough to do this. I have built 3 Caterhams....rebuilt several Lotus Elans....but those were old tech cars. I just dont have the experience with air bags....electronics...etc.

Ok...found Classic Mini...

Mentor Ohio..only about 2.5 hours from me.

Spoke to them just a few minutes ago. Close to $1000 just for the kit (not the $400 mentioned above) and they are not sure they can do it either. Installation would be extra.

They will get back to me.

If you can get me the kit for $500..be happy to give you the $100 extra

just buy the kit for 400 and then bring it to them. or a shop that specializes in car wiring, you can always try to install it and hope you can get it back together if it doesnt work out

Did you ask for the NAM discount? However it will only knock off 20-30%, not close to $400 price.

No...I did not know about it....i will do so.

I am reading the install....I may give it a try. Is there pdf's of how to remove the steering wheel...airbag.. and the rest of the stuff that has to come off. Do anyone know if I there are any other parts needed?

Do you need a puller for the steering wheel?

Good luck on getting this done. When I bought my 03 MC in Sept. 03 I almost bought a bare-bones 03 MC with no cruise. I asked the MA and they said, "you can always have it installed later". I then asked them if they knew anyone who had this done on their MINI. They did not. Fortunately for me, someone else bought the 03 I was looking at, and I ordered my MINI. The MFSW was my first and most important option.

I am having a very difficult time understanding why this is just such a big deal. NOBODY I can find has any more information on this. Nobody I know has done it. I have asked to call to the factory rep.

You sound like you aren't afraid of wrenches! Go on eBay and find a BMW TIS cd-rom. That IS the factory shop manual. Make sure to find one that covers an 05 MINI (R50, R52, R53 in BMW-speak). That'll cover the removal of the other parts. The steering column upper and lower shrouds are pretty simple to remove. I can look up some stuff (I have the cd) for you and give you some guidance if need be.

I have looked up the repair instructions. It seems to be a rather lengthly install with a lot of wiring. It also calls for coding of the vehicle but does not specify what to code it with. We have told a handful of people that it is not possible, did not know the kit existed. Could not guarantee that it would give you cruise 100%. The dealer most likely does not want to attempt it because of the risk factor.
