Mobil 1 vs Castrol Syntex. Opinions?
#2
The Syntec that the dealer uses is actually very good and it's not the same as the one you buy off the shelf. I believe that Castrol gives BMW a special blend. I'm currently running Mobil 1 and next month I'll get a used oil analysis of it to compare with the analysis I got of the dealer stuff.

I hope links to other forums are allowed, if not sorry in advance.

This might help you understand what ignote was talking about. My personal opinion is that Mobl 1 5W30 is very good oil and I'd use it based on the convenience of getting it at WallyWorld and the favorable price compared to the MINI dealer selling me oil. But the MINI dealer, when they do the change, are allegedly using the good, German, synthetic version Syntec.

I have always used the Syntec in my vehicles. You can find it at Wally World and even Kmart in the different weights. Its cheaper at Wally World though in the 5 qt jug. Since this is what MINI/BMW wants in the engine...this is what its going to get.
I had an oil workup done on my HEMI after 7k miles on the current oil change and it was still doing its job very well....they were even surprised at the results because it looked, acted, and protected like brand new oil. I come from the old school way of thinking though....every 3 months/or 3k miles I still do the change with synthetic. Doing the change myself between the dealer changes is easy as pie.
