Jack Point Gone!

Greetings,

Has anyone had this experience? My passenger side front jack point is gone (and I can't place a jackstand underneath the car without it)... so much for my ongoing DIY modding activities/therapy. It must have fallen off (or was sheared off?) while I was driving and I didn't notice. The car is lowered, so it's more likely to scrape the pavement than a stock MINI...

I'm not sure how the factory jack points are secured to the chassis (I had assumed that they were welded on). I'm assuming that a replacement part could be had through a dealer, but does anyone know how a jack point is fastened to the vehicle?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Dzienkuje!

The jack points are plastic blocks, and you may want to read this or this thread.

BFG9000, thanks for this tip. I had no idea that they are plastic! Doesn't inspire confidence...

2 of mine are missing, too. I just place the jack where the pad used to be.

Also, I have heard that using the front jack point you can lift up both the front and rear at the same time to rotate the tires.....is this really safe?

Check out Texas Speedwerks. They make low profile replacements. Better than oem and very good quality.

Yes. Thanks to the exceptional rigidity of the MINI chassis.

The Jack oem blocks are really cheap(about $8) and are always falling off. They are held in place using a simple plastic snap in type plug....The dealers usually have em in stock but it is a minor PIA.

They look really nice but $100??? I do not think so, Why is everything for Mini so expensive? Since you would not jack the MCS (Maybe for an MC w/ spare) up to chg tires on the road...only in the Garage, I use a 2x4 for garage jacking or to work under it, I use a set of Rhino Ramps, then Jack stands just to make sure...Might make an extension so I can use my regular HD steel ramps which raise it higher, but right now, the Mini will not make it up on them without the front air dam hitting....and mine is stock height on 17" rims...

Think I will be installing a Fomoto oil drain plug valve on it next oil chg so I can just flip the spring loaded lever to drain the oil...It has just been sitting around the garage and it's time. The exact same one that fits my 05 element, also fits the mini oil plug...gets rave reviews! Getting too old to be creeping under the mini (and my belley is still flat too, so it is not the problem!)!

Not necessarily... have tried the same method on a Spitfire... which has an even shorter wheelbase than the MINI... but has the chassis stiffness of a wet noodle... results are... not the same...

Thanks to y'all for the input! I've contacted Jayson at Classic MINI and I'm getting a replacement (about $7 with NAM discount, regularly $9). Heck, while I'm at it, I think I'll order a couple spares.

The texas speedwerks units look good, too, though. I like the idea of a metal jack point when I'm under the car! Probably worth every penny...

Just a suggestion...Get a set of jackstands ...Cheap insurance. I learned years ago never to get under a vehicle help up by any type of jack alone! Luckily it was not me!
Jeck er up and put the jackstands in place....safety!

Hi Gizzer,

Actually, I am using jackstands... sorry if there was any misunderstanding. The problem is, without the jack points, there is no place to put a jackstand.

Also, the factory jack points are not designed for use with a conventional floorjack or lift. There are direct contact points on the chassis for actual lifting.

Glad to hear you are using the stands!!!

I use a 2x4 block (that I shaped) at the jack point to chg tires and a low profile floorjack....works fine, then the Jack stands go under...I do not like those cheapo plastic things...and while nice, the Texas speedworks blocks are too pricey for the number of times I have the Mini up (I do not track it). Have the ramps as well so I am good to go.

Regards
jeff
