Rear Brake Pad

Hi All,

About a month ago, I took my Mini to a local tire shop for a simple routine tire balance and rotation. The service manager called and said that my rear brake pads were worn and needed to be replaced. This is something that I have known about already and was intending to do myself soon. I figured since the car was already there, and since I was going to take a trip the next day, just to have the shop go ahead and replace the pads.

While driving on my trip the next day, I heard a rather annoying squeal from the right rear at speed (70mph). The squeal would go away if I tapped the brakes, and come right back. This went on for a few days. I took the car back to shop where the pads were installed, and they gave me the ususal bs..."its normal. they need to break in..." yada yada. They sprayed some brake quite on the rotors and sent me on my way. Squeal gone, but came back soon.

This past week, the squeal became constant, so this morning off with the right rear wheel to find that the inside pad was not even clipped to the dam piston! It fell right out when I removed the caliper! The obscure pad wear is very very edvident in the pic below. Went striaght to MINI of Long Beach and new set of pads went on today!

I took the new/old pads back to the shop (remain namless as they are good folks) and they told me that this wear pattern is normal! Now, Im not a BMW brake expert, but I ahve changed brake pads on many different makes/models of cars in my life and I have never come accross normal wear that looks like this! These pads have been driven for 2000-2500 miles or so. They told me to come back after I had drive 2500 miles on the new ones I installed today, and if they are not worn the same, they would refund my money.

yes, that was clearly not clipped in all the way.

Most of the MINIs I've seen are the opposite of that.

What I'm trying to say is that your pads appeared to be riding a fraction of an inch too far away from the hub causing the lip to form in the pad.

All MINIs I've seen have the pads just a small fraction of an inch too far inboard (toward the hub). This causes a small ridge to form around the outer rim of the brake rotor.

It's as if your pads weren't fully seated against the caliper bracket.

Exactly. Not seated properly and the clip on the back were not clipped to the piston! The picture does not do justice to how bad this thing is.
