Shift, EML, SES then limp mode!?

My 05 MCS with 47,000 mi acted very oddly tonight, and any help or experience would be great!

I went to shift into 5th gear, pretty aggressively, but not too much. As the clutch was on its way out and I was getting on the gas, the car bogged horribly - no acceleration at all.

All of the lights lit up, and the car went into limp mode. I coasted past the toll I was near while the idle jumped all over the place. I went to the side of the road, turned the car off, then back on.

Once it was back on, it operated normally, but the SES light remains.

It sounds electrical; anyone with ideas?

Did some searching and it looks like it could be a number of things including the bypass valve, a spark plug, bad gas, bad injector, bad wiring harness, etc...

We shall see!

Mine did the same thing with 49k and it was the bypass valve. Notice and cold morning start/idle probs lately? Stumble at 32 - 3400 rpms getting more noticeable? Bypass valve spring getting tired.

Thanks for the respose - I have not noticed either of those things, but it does cut power occasionally on upshifts.

That has happned to me a few times I can't remember the code but it was a torque calculation error, I just cleared the SES when it happens, I have not seen this in the last 50k miles of driving come to think of it this only happned when driving real hard at the track.

Well funny thing, I was just going to post the same question this morning, until I found this thread. Thanks mbcoops.

I drive an automatic, and did something similiar yesterday morning, I went aggressive in my acceleration between 5th and 4th gear, I believe, to get up a slight incline....and in between the shift of gears, the engine loses power, the lights on my tach light up (EML included), car engine goes limp, I coasted the car to the road shoulder and parked it, turned off the engine completely, then started the car again. It started fine, but the SES light remains on.

The MINI has a little over 5k miles and I notice a slight drop in power in the gears.

I'm taking the car to have it looked at Tuesday morning.

I'm trying to take mine in today to have it looked at on Monday. Thanks for sharing the experience, Trevor; hopefully it's as simple as that.

I guess the best case scenario is that it's just the bpv, they can replace it, then I can just buy a better one (detroit tuned) if I ever notice this behavior again.

Dropped it off...all of the MAs on the floor seemed to agree that it was probably the bypass valve. Nobody from the service dept. was there, so a true diagnosis won't be had 'till monday.

Talked to the dealership, and the culprit was the bypass valve. The only pain in the butt is they "have to reflash the ecu" in order to do the fix, so now I have to go back to my other place to get the Dinan program put back on.

All is fixed, and they didn't even reflash the ecu. Code was p1688.

I will go to the detroit tuned BPV as soon as I start noticing the symptoms again, now that I know what to look for.

I picked up my car at MINI service at the dealership today, and they gave me the same code (p1688), same fix - replace bypass valve.
