Bump? Why?
If you want to keep discussing the two, why don't you join BITOG where the opinions are more backed by knowlege and oil analysis?
If you have a question still not answered, please ask it again.

Short lived? 1976-1995, then rebirthed as the Pepperwagon (Cayenne - I don't like them, but it is a Porsche w/front engine).

The 924/931: 1976-1983, then 1986-88 as the 924S

The 928: 1978-1995

The 944/951: 1983-1991

The 968: 1992-1995

Only the 968 had what I could consider a "short" life. Say what you want about the cars, but the only one that wasn't very successful from a financial standpoint was the 968. For their times, they were all fabulous cars.

It is most likely the inspiration behind moving to the Boxster.
Actually, their marketing department was very keen to compare the Boxster to the 550 and not the 914. The 914 and 924 have the dubious distinctions of being collaborations between Porsche and others (914- VW, 924 - Audi) and are often referred to as NARP (Not A Real Porsche). Even the 914-6 It is too bad really, because for their times there was not much else that combined performance and affordability as well as these entry-level Porsches.

I go about 7,500-8,000 between oil changes on my S using Syntec, which seems a good compromise between 3-5K and 10-15K. And just because synthetic oil turns black, unlike dino oil this does not lessen its lubrication abilities. Changing fully synthetic oil in intervals less than 5K, IMO (and the O of my very knowledgable Toyota mechanic), is a HUGE waste of perfectly good (and expensive) product.

There's a handful of guys that autoX their 914s near me. I love everything about them....how smooth and flat they corner, how they look.

What does everyone have to say about Royal Purple? It's advertised to go for 15k miles. However, I normally fall into the "change the oil when it needs it" camp. Not the "the manual say 15k miles, by god I'm gonna take this oil to 15k miles!" group. And I usually find that I change the oil between 8-10k miles.

Like many have said...

the only way to know is via analysis. FWIW, the 20k+ intervals the R55/56/57 are calculating are a bit long....

Color is no indication of lubricating efficacy.

Synthetic is better in several ways than non-synthetic (although referred to as Dino oil, it's really from dead plants!)

Use dictates lifetime. You track your car, change often. You drive gently, change less often.

And the debates go on, and on, and on, and on....

Ben, I'm currently looking for some new oil for my MINI and I have it narrowed down to either Mobil1 or RP. I contacted RP and their rep told me they would recommend an interval of 12k miles if I use RP.

I've been extremely happy with Royal Purple.

I remember on my WRX, when I had it, I let it break in and then switched it to Mobil1. Mobil1 was the only full syn oil I'd ever used. And it was funny how the engine seemed to rev a little more freely, boost seemed to come on a tad sooner. Mostly, I just did it for piece of mind. But then I'd heard so many good things about Royal Purple and decided to make the switch and the amount of difference I noticed from Dino-oil to M1, I felt the same difference from M1 to RP.

I was just curious what everyone's opinions on it were.

If you use Mobil 1, be sure to use the EURO version (5w-40) or the 0W-30 one....they are both superior to the regular M1, which is now just a super-refined Dino oil (Mineral oil...IE..crude is used for the base stocks now)...like Castrol Syentic (in the US)....the euro version, and the 0w30 are still both "TRUE" synthetic oils in the truest sense....the regular M1 has been downgraded a bit to compete on price. Thank Castrol's lawyers and the US court system for that. There are several threads with the appropriate info.
RP is well liked by many...just like other TRUE synthetic oils, like AM-SOL, and Red-line.

Mobil 1 5W-40 is designed for turbo diesel trucks or ESP formula M (diesels with particulate filters) depending on the label. Mobil 1 0W-30 comes in fuel economy (or extreme cold weather) and racing formulas, the racing formula is not designed for street use and will kill a cat, the fuel economy formula is a bit thin for hot environments. Ultra refined mineral base stocks can be superior to lab created base stocks and will allow additives to mix completely.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is an approved oil for the MINI (and Dodge Viper) for good reason, it has a very low poor point (indicative of high POA and Ester base stocks) which allows the oil to distribute easily on start-up, and it has been extensively tested by most of the European car manufacturers showing very good stability over time.

Another high quality option is Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage formula, it also has an extremely low poor point and has extra additives plus detergents; the additives offer an added measure of protection for when tolerances increase with many miles driven.

Correction it should be 10W-30 not 5W-30 on the Mobil 1 High Mileage formula.
