TampaMCS - I'm in Port Charlotte, about 90 mi. south of you, so meeting up isn't really feasible. Thank you for the offer though. One question for you - is Ferman lenient with modifications? Will they blame the problem I'm having on my HAI?

TonyB - this is the conclusion I've come to also. Let's see if I can get my 10k mi service scheduled early.

Take TampaMCS up on his offer ( he knows what he's doing ). The data logging will cut out a bunch of speculation & most likely give you the answer.

Also doing some thinking...

This could also be caused by a shorting plug wire.

You are sure DSC isnt kicking in causing this? if the power cuts and the triangle in the guages flash, its the traction control.

If you change your mind about driving up let me know.

I thought the same thing, but at 8K? A little, real, data would go a long way....

As you know, all it takes is for the wire to have been kinked just a little at some point in its life.

I'd like to throw an ohmeter on it just to see the resistance amongst the wires.

Does it do this repeatedly every time? Any other noises or anything?

True enough. It could have been bad from the beginning & now its had enough. 1 thing you pointed out, DSC light, if it didn't come on it would point to a component failure, spark plug wire, coil pack, something disassociated from the management but that should through a CEL, No?

It SHOULD trigger a CEL if it is a component failing causing the power to fail.

It won't if the dsc doesnt.

HOWEVER....I had a weird electrical problem with my driver side window. It would intermittantly work. Turns out that the fuse holder under the dash was open too much, so the fuse wouldnt make contact when it was cold. When it warmed up or you banged on the fust box it would work. Fast forward, took took a screwdriver or pick and pulled them closer together boom, it worked again consistently.

I wonder if he is having a similar thing happen.

We could go crazy trying to figure out what it is though.

I too have had odd things with the fuses & relays to where re-seating often helped, temporarily.

TampaMCS - thanks for all of your help so far. I'll give Pat a call some time tomorrow.

My car does not have DSC, but I do turn ASC off whenever I get in, so that can't be the problem. It's not completely consistent - about 70% of the time I go past 5k I can feel it - and there are no other noticeable changes. I looked inside the fusebox, and didn't see anything abnormal.

How would I go about testing plug wire resistance?

if you have an digital multimeter you can clip both each end and measure the amount of resitance. If you happen to find one that is way off from the others, you might have found your problem.

Is the car idling and otherwise driving ok?

"I do turn ASC off whenever I get in"

I wonder if there would be a CEL with this on.

At 1 time the up stream O2 sensor went bad on this car & the DSC w/SEL would come on. After a day or so The lights would stay out for months even though there were some driveablity issues. Then on a long trip, in the winter, Limp Mode ( DSC & SEL ) on the Penn Turnpike, in the speed lane no less. I'm not liking this too much. A dealer in the Philadelphia area (this was 2+ years ago ) asked if I just filled my tank..... "well, yess about 160 miles ago", he said this was normal. Right. Sure enough on the return trip the lights were out never to return. It went to the local dealer as I suspected a closed loop problem, sure enough it was the up stream O2.

Yesterday I pulled a wire & got a SEL. Tried the same thing on my Explorer, same thing, XB ditto.

The ASC may be a clue, or not. I looked at the records for this car to remember whether there was a light or not. There was & wasen't.....

UPDATE: I couldn't feel the car cutting power for the past week or so, but today, it started to again, and then trhew a CEL. I went to autozone to get it checked, and code P0326 (knock sensor) came up. I fill up at the same Shell with 93 90% of the time, so it doesn't really make sense to me.

In a way it does make sense...

if the knock sensor loop is going nuts, then the car pulls timing and no power. Too bad it's under the intake manifold behind the SC.....

An easy thing to check is the connector at the front of the engine. See if the pins are corroded or anything....
