I have seen numerous complaints on this issue in these forums. Some folks say a software update fixes the problem, but that does not make sense since your car is brand new.
Comments from the CVT fans (I know you're out there, I've read and participated in the manual vs. automatic name calling fests! )

several hours and not one reply... Those CVT's must really be worth defending, eh? Where's all the people that were cussing at the folks who suggested manual trannies are sportier?

Dude, I can barely read your posts. Anyway call MINIUSA and request info on either software update version 32.1 (Released in February) or update version 33.1 (Released just a few weeks ago). Release 33.1 will take care of your sudden lurching problem.

I have an automatic transmission. The lurch is standard. Get over it. My dealer says it is supposed to be like that. My car at a cold start will almost jump out of its shoes when put into Drive.

Just think of it as a interesting quirk.

Motor on.

Thanks for the replies!

Wedge and Nomonsterinme,
Do you have version 33.1 of the software?

Cooper4us,
have you never experienced the lurching, even with the previous version of the software?

I'm really curious about this issue. I like the idea of the CVT, but I'm not going to buy one if I have to accept this as a "quirk"...

the lurching is not how the cvt is supposed to perform!
this is a software problem! this will and can be fixed!
i need to get updated to 33.2 to fix this.
i've got 32.1 and it fixed it for a while, but it's back!
don't let it get you down, it's not the worst thing in the world!

I just got 33.0 installed this Monday and I find it to be a bit smoother, but I still notice some jerkiness at lower driving speeds like parking lot driving for example. I am not for sure what to do now ,although, MINI has been VERY helpful in aiding me in getting this probelm fixed which I appreciate very much They even sent me a shirt, hat, and keychain for my problems, and is follwing up on the progress of my CVT..that is what I call customer service! I really love my car and the CVT, I just hope this minor problem can be resolved.

No my car does not jump from park to drive? Please explain this since that sounds a bit scary, has that happened to you?

I notice at lower speed 0-10 aprox. it will lurch a bit from take off, although it is a bit better than before the problem is still not a 100% resolved.

Sorry, I suck at typing esspecially when I type fast (like when I'm at work and playing in the online forums) Anyway, I found out some information today. I made an appointment for tuesday to get my car worked on.. ( the lurching is NOT supposed to happen. If your dealer told you that then they are wrong. The girl is going to fix teh problem which is relativly common. I asked her if it was a comuter upgrade issue ( since my car jsut roled off the ship) she said no but my computer does need to be program correctly, sounds like the same thign to me but I guess they do the tweaking there at mini. I'll let you know what happens after tuesday, they said it would only take about and hour. I'll keep you all posted sorry about my typing...

the jumping from park to drive only happens when the car is not completely warmed up.
it feels like someone is hitting your car really lightly from behind.
this happens with the brake pressed.
it's not a big deal, it's not like the 80's audi's that would take off!
they did fix this when i got 32.1, but it's back!
i have been putting off taking it into the dealer, i hate driving loaner car's!
oh well, i've got to do it soon!
keep us posted!

I just had a thought...have any of you who are experiencing this "lurching" noticed it only happens in one mode. For example, it only happens in manual mode or sport mode?

I had the cold start problem, the lurching/shuddering, but not the "jumping." I got CD 32.1 and the cold start issue seemed to go away and the lurching/shuddering was gone - for a short while.

Now, the lurching/shuddering is back stronger than before and I have also got the "jumping" problem from Park or Reverse into Drive.

I don't think 32.1 fixes the lurching problem. Without the shade of a doubt, there is a problem with the learning or adaptive portion of the controlling software. Will 32.1 or 32.2 fix these issues? No one seems to know.

yeah I think mine is begining to coem back now.. it probably learned taht I sit in stop and go traffic adn that it shoudl stop and go.l.. i'm really surprised the lurchign has coem back.. becasu eit went away just fine. though it does feel liek a differnt lurchign this time.. its at least more natrual and i'm used to it.. i'll call mini later about it.. however teh reverse lurch isn't thre anymore so thats good. just got to get teh studderstep that I have during the morning commute. I like the idea of teh adaptive driving I just want it to work!
