Thanks to Mooney, kensmini and Mini2Go for nailing down the purpose of the button on the dash, that's exactly what my salesperson told me it was for.

Now on to the oval "whats it" next to the Panorama Roof controls. I'm quite sure that this is where you insert the hand crank from your tool pouch in the boot to close your roof in the event of a power failure. It may also have a use as a cellular microphone but primary use is emergency roof operation.

The Parts List does indeed call it a "Microphone Cover"

MiniB:
The spot for your manual sunroof crank is above the clock in the headliner. If you need to open the sunroof without the motor, the clock assembly pops out and you insert the little crank from the toolkit. [Page 30 of 2002 Owner's Manual] The righthand oval is the grill for the cell phone mic.

>>The oval thingie in the roof is the phone mic as stated. The purple nobbie on the dash is for the climate control, or so my dealer said. apparently it is a Temp sensor for the interior of the car for your auto climate control. Hate to contradict people but that is what I had heard

Yep, thats what I heard too. According to the "MINI Unwrapped" CD that was sent to me, the little round nub on the dash, under the windscreen is part of the auto climate control function. Appearantly it is a UV sensor.

No, no...the climate control sensors are on the bottom sides of the air-conditioning unit on the console. They're in plain view. It's funny how we know so much more than most people selling the car!!!

Yes, it is. It's mentioned in the on official users manual you get a month later in the mail. It measures the suns intensity...

The thing by the sunroof sw is so Al Gore can watch you so he can alert the thought police should you start thinking about what it does!

Geez Zappa... call me out on something i posted how long ago???

But the way it was first described as a sensor, it didn't make sense.. but as it's a sensor for the sun, well, it's a better place then in the boot..
