MCSa Tranny Q

MCSa Tranny Q
Q to owners with 6-speed auto box. Have you heard of a loud clunk noise in manual mode? It does that sometimes when it automatically downshift from higher gear on a downhill slope. It feels like the car is disengaging from higher gear to lower one for engine braking. In the process, it comes a "clunk" accompanies by a slight jerk from the down-shifting. Darn it, I want SMG or DSG! The auto box seems to be functioning normally with no other noises.
Any input is welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for giving feedback.
There's a jerk accompanies with the clunking. I am guessing it's the torque converter that is making that nosie and the jerking. I did check my motor mount, it's fine so far (I only have 2500 on the clock). It also comes to my attention that it only does that in manual mode, not in D/S or D. Does the samething happen to you?

If it makes you feel better I've driven SMG & DSG quite a lot and they both have exhibited clunking and perhaps light jerking in low gears/very low speed situations, often when letting off the gas (DSG is smooth as butta otherwise ). The steptronic 3 series I had also clunked at times, at first they changed some valve but then said it was normal. Off the top of my head I can't think if I'd say the MCSa 'clunks' audibly or not on downhill, but overall the tranny can be jerky going to first in similar situations and I think its probably fine.

Thanks, eval. It does get jerky if I shift to first gear manually. The funny thing is, it is very smooth in D mode going from 2nd to 1st.
Lisdexic:
Just to clarify, the noise I descibed actually happens when the computer decides to downshift automatically in manual shift mode. I don't do the downshifting. Anyway, I think I will wait to see if that gets worse. Or perhaps, it's normal noise like eval says.
Thank you guys.

As far as I know the tranny does not shift to first gear on its own in D when coming to a stop, it just goes to second, so that could be the crux of the difference you are experiencing.
If you really feel that it is too abrupt or odd there is no harm in taking it to the dealer and having your concerns put on record even if they do say it is normal.
Cheers and happy motoring

Hey guys:
I know it's not important, but I should clarify. Yes, the car won't downshift to 1st in manual mode. The clunking comes when, say, it disengages from 4th or 5th to lower gear.
And when I say it's smooth when it downshifts automatically to 1st, it is strictly in D and D/S mode, not maunal.
