DetroitTuned BBK opinions??

Hi MINI fans!

One of my front caliper is dead (156k KM of loyal service) and I need to change my rotors and pads at the same time... From the quotes I gathered, it seems to be cheaper to get a new kit rather than getting a new MINI caliper and after-market rotors and pads. DetroitTuned has put a nice BBK kit for $900 but before I order it, I would like to get some opinions....

I only do street driving, and would like to have some more braking power... (currently, I have EBC RedStuff pads, EBC rotors, StopTech SS lines and TyrolSport stiffening kits) but it doesn't brake as much as I would like...

Any DetroitTuned BBK kit users around here?? At $900, it seems to be a great deal... (I would get the 12.8" rotors kit).

Thanks!

My BBK arrived on Thursday and I got it installed today... Unfortunately, one of the rear caliper's bleed screw broke and I'll have to wait until Monday to get it fixed.

The kit looks great in my opinion. Everything is very nice. The calipers are awesome and look great. 12.8" rotors look HUGE!! lol

lol be strong my friend!!!

I had to wait more than a month before getting a new transmission. The only advantage is that you will have a blast driving your MINI for the first few days!

What happened to your SC?

Are pad swaps as easy as the Wilwoods?

Yes - pad swaps with the Outlaw 2000 Series calipers are just as easy as with the Wilwoods...

I'm running the DT BBK and have no complaints. Considerable improvement over stock after testing them on the track a month back.

I know a few people that use the Outlaw brakes on the RX7 for track duty and they work well. Wilwoods also and StopTechs are just amazing.

Looking at DT's caliper doesn't leave me convinced that they caliper is as stiff as the Wilwoods or others. Stiff caliper equates to a nice firm brake pedal and other good attributes. Stoptech has some good information about that. If your budget is $900, I would pick the brake kit that has proven itself on race tracks the world over. The Wilwood kit at TCE looks like a better product for the price - especially from an engineering perspective.

I'm sure someone will come along and flame me...

I got the rear caliper fixed...

But another bad luck happened... The bleeder's screws on the front calipers don;t have any hole to bleed... The guy at the garage called Chad at DT but this didn't help much since he offered to get the screws from Outlaw, which would take too long...

I got my car back!!! Arthur from Euro Auto Tuning was kind enough to take some time and look for bleeder's screws at local shops. He finally found some that fit.

First impressions about the kit: It really stops great. The brake pedal is softer than before, but I guess I'll get used to it. At first, I thought it wasn't that powerful, but once I realized I need to put more pressure on the pedal than before, it really put a smile on my face!

It does shake a little when I brake hard but the mechanic guy said it is normal. He has an A8 with Porsche calipers and 13" rotors and he is experiencing the same thing.

Bottom line, I really like the kit but need to get used to the softer pedal feel!

Shake a little? Where? How? That's not good IMO that it shakes.

I wouldn't think they wouldn't or shouldn't do that. Does anyone else have this situation happening to them with bbk's installed?

I have the DT kit and like everything except the rotors are soooo heavy (20 lbs) each. The Wilwood rotors are much lighter.

I asked Chad about the vibrations issue and he told me this should be happening, so I'll get my garage to look at this tomorrow.

Chad has been very helpful and i think this is how business should be done!

Hopefully, my garage will fix the problem tomorrow so that I can fully enjoy DetroitTuned's BBK!

I recommend this BBK to everyone who is looking for more braking power than the simple rotors, pads, stainless steel & caliper stiffening kit can provide (I had all of those before). I am aware that Brembo & StopTech kits are much better, but for $900, there is no way you can get better braking power than DT's BBK!

There is VERY little difference (if any) in caliper 'stiffness' between Outlaw and Wilwood... We've run both and found no difference.

I am not quite sure this is the case. I've got the ST kit and I love it to death. But as a far as balance the willwood, dt and tsw kits are as good if not better.

The stoptech increases caliper stiffness, caliper surface area and leverage on the disc by so much it's tough to believe it would be much better then the aforementioned outlaw 2000 based kits or the willwood with regards to brake bias and balance.

Glad you're happy with the kit. I am a little confused by the pedal feel. My ST kit feels about the same for pedal feel as the stock kit. My buddy that has a dt kit says the same thing about his pedal feel as you do about yours.

I wonder how the tsw kit feels. Truth be told that's the kit I wanted it just came out after I got my ST kit.

one thing that can exhibit a soft pedal feel is air in the line, i know that has bugged me countless times

The shaking issue is fixed. I spent the whole day driving and shopping for X-mas and I really like DT BBK! It gets the job done for a reasonable price.

Here are a few pics of the kit on my car...

That was a crazy issue with the bleeder screws. We shipped a set, next day, to him as soon as we got the phone call. We are glad you like the kit. I have had the kit on my car for a long time and love it. We are working on rotor weights right now, but it's going to make the kit go up in price. so it's a balance of weight ver. price. In the end our kit weights the same as stock, but with much better braking. With other kits you get a bit lighter rotor, but after you get the 13 lb caliper, they weight the same. so you still hauling around the same weight, you just do not have the load on the wheels. but again we all have a budget.
