Because at the time Texas Speedworks was the only place I could find them.

I've got the 14->12 conversion studs on mine. I got them from Way Motor Works.

It may not be an issue you you, but the folks at Discount Tire tell me that they cannot work on a Mini with studs on them ...

I've had the TSW 14>12 conversions on mine since day one... now almost 18k miles on the car and no issues.

Hi folks,
I'm new to the MINI world so this may be a dumb question, but what are the reason for a stud conversion? To fit aftermarket wheels that wont take the bigger 14mm lugs? Anything else?

Thanks!

That was it for me. Had a set of Panasports from my R-53 and the R-56 14's would not fit in the holes. The TSW conversion worked great. Did it about a year ago and have added about 12k miles. No problems.

yup, thats one advantage if you do the 14->12mm stud.
also great to have studs if you swap wheels often...like at the track.
makes removal and reinstall easy.

Do the TSW 14 to 12mm have any rusting issues?

I've got Turner Motorsports studs with the Muteki lug nuts from TSW. Been on about a year and a half and LOTS of miles with no issues. I went with the Turners because I didn't need the 14-12 conversion, just straight 12mm which TSW didn't have at the time. I HIGHLY recommend TSW for parts, customer service and any helpful info you might need. They make and sell great parts and Jeff and Scott are very helpful.

I have one of the early conversion stud sets from TSW, so things may have changed now, but yes, I have a significant amount of surface rust on the studs. Every now and then I just clean it off and grease the exposed threads to provide some measure of protection.

I to have an early 14 -12 set on my late build R53. A little and I mean a little anti-seize on the threads prevents rusting and if like me you are swapping wheels often the lugs don't seize from track use.

I've had the TCKR Pro Wheel Studs on my R53 for about three years and haven't had any problems with rust or anything.

Is there a downside to this conversion, besides cost? Is it weaker? Warranty issues?

The 12 mm studs could be as strong or even stronger than the oem 14mm if they are made of stronger metal, but it's impossible to tell just from looking at them. TSM seems like a good company though and people have been using their stud kits for racing without any issues I've heard of.

Note that I was also worried about the strength so I went with the 14-14 conversion kit instead of the 14-12 so I'd be keeping the same diameter bolts. Stupid me though, the 14 mm set has regular sized lug nuts that don't fit the small holes in my aftermarket rims.

I have about 32K miles on a set of TSW 14 -12 mm studs. I've been known to push it a little too and visit the track now and again, like every other weekend if I can. No problems to report. Lug nuts holding up great, studs are in perfect shape.
