BBK - Bias and other Questions

Thinking about a big brake kit. Searched the forums and got all my basic questions answered, but had a few more:

1. Is it possible that a BBK could add too much front brake bias?

2. Is there any need for a larger master cylinder?

3. What is the weight difference between the Wilwood 12.2" Dynapro kit vs. the TCE/Wilwood 13" (x .81") FSL kit? I know the 12" is approx. 5 lbs/corner lighter than OEM. How about the 13"?

4. Any grinding required for the 13" kit, or the 11.75" rear kit? Wheels are aftermaket 17x7.

Thanks for any insight.

1. Bias is not an issue.
2. Nope, stock is just fine
3. The TCE 13 x .81 is lighter than stock but I don't have specifics.
4. Grinding IS required for the 13" TCE kit, but not much. Only took a minute or two with an angle grinder.

I've had the TCE 13" fronts on my 04 for almost 1.5 years and many track days. I've just replaced the front rotors due to excessive wear and heat stress. I use 100% racing compound pads which aren't too gentle with the rotors. I would expect these to last a very long time under normal street use.

I also have the TCE 11.75" rear rotors, another small grinding job required. Based on their wear so far, they should last forever.

Yes it is possible and I know of a number which do this. Poor desgns and feel. But due to the short wheel base of the car it seems to live with it ok.

2. Is there any need for a larger master cylinder?

In most properly built systems; no. In the instance of some (see no. 1) yes it would be a wise thing to do. (if you can find something) Won't cure the bias issue but sure would improve feel.

Shipping wt on the DP comes in about 38lbs, shipping on the TCE 13 is closer to 46 given the larger pads, calipers and rotors. If weight is the issue for you the DP may be your best choice. If extended track use is what you desire then mass is your friend.

4. Any grinding required for the 13" kit, or the 11.75" rear kit? Wheels are aftermaket 17x7.

Yes. The ears of the caliper contact the ears of the knuckle and require some clearance work. Very minimal and quick to do. Don't know of any grinding on the rear from the ones I have fit.

Thanks for any insight.

Todd,

I have been trying to find a master cylinder that is slightly larger than the stock MCS cylinder. As you had suggested to me, a larger cylinder very well might improve the feel of my Wilwood system (BBK on front and the new Wilwood calipers on the rear).

Apparently, one concern is that the DSC connection on the new master cylinder be compatible with that on the Mini. I've seen some drawings of the E46 325 cylinder, and it looks a bit larger than that on my Mini, however, it's hard to tell about the DSC.

Have you found a larger master cylinder that would work on the Mini? If anyone else out there has experience along these lines, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Many thanks,

Many thanks,
Personally I have not. I admit however that aside from knowing that Wilwood and others do sell masters that are larger, that I have no reason to need this.

There are 1.00" bore parts on the market but I really have no experience with fitting them to the MINI if it could be done. My only suggestion is conversations with a BMW specialist who knows the product line. Maybe one of the BMW aftermarket vendors can offer you more info.
