2. Can't personally vouch for the tires, but one of our club members has Avons (205/50-16s, btw) on his car, and as far as I know is happy with them.

They have good grip, good wet weather performance, plus comfortable ride & wonderfully quiet for most of their service life. I have more than 27,000 miles on a set (205/50/16s on R84s) which is outstanding for their class. As can be expected, time, heat, and sun have taken their toll in the comfort and noise category. The comfort comes from a soft sidewall which takes away from turn-in response as compared to a tire like the ES100, but not much of a shortcoming on its own.

I'll second the comments that the 205/50-16 Avon M500s will work very well. I used a set for the last two summers, and liked them. They replaced the 215/45-16 Falken Azenis R215 when they discontinued that model (went through several sets of those). I've now got a set of 215/45-16 Azenis R615s on, but only because I use these as autocross tires for events where I can't take R compounds with me. I also used the Avons for a number of events and they did quite well, especially considering their excellent street manners. Ultimately the Azenis are a bit faster, but aren't as quite and refined on the street.
I think you'll be very happy with the Avons.
