Poll: SSR Comp Color
Hey all. I'm going to be sending my newly acquired SSR Comps to get fixed as 3 of the wheels are bent (didn't know about them) and all 4 lips need to be re-machined (knew about that).
Well here's the question, what color do I get the wheels painted. I'm leaning towards simply color-matching the centers to DS and leaving the lips machined. But here are the options:
- SSR Anthracite/Machined Lip (Same color as now)
- SSR Silver/Machined Lip
- Flat Black/Blue Pinstripe on Lip (Costs More)
- Flat Black/Dark Silver Pinstripe on Lip (Costs More)
- MCS Dark Silver/Machined Lip (FINAL CHOICE)

Back to the poll...
Anyone know the DS paint code off the top of their head?
EDIT: Nevermind the paint code. BMW Code is 871 and DuPont Code is P1313 for Dark Silver.

Actually I do agree with kenchan's preference for DS.
I have SSR Comps in Silver/Machined Lip and you have to look carefully to even tell that it has a machined lip. The original anthracite looks nice but the difference is still subtle. DS would give a nice contrast with the machined lip.

Well I just got back to work (hehe) from dropping off the wheels at Wheels America. Getting any bends fixed, centers painted DS and lips re-machined. They should be ready tomorrow.
BUT, I have a question, one of the hubrings got mangled as I had to hammer it out lol. The others could use replacements, so where can I get some? (72.2/56.1, for anyone wondering) Do I even need to run the rings? Could I run the wheels for a couple days, maybe a week without rings until I get the new ones?

sounds good! i also hear great things about WheelsAmerica
www.fixrim.com so im looking forward to your updates.
you can run without centering rings. our wheels are lug centric by design,
the centering rings only make it easier for us to get it close to the alignment
when we tighten down the lugs. more of a convenience thing.
only crappy pos wheels "require" centering rings..

I've heard good things about Wheels America as well which is why I opted to go with them despite the higher cost. Quick turn-around time as well... Will post again tomorrow with impressions.

I would recommend hub-centric rings as well. Its a precaution....too much debate between knowledgeable people about whether you need them or not.
I just got hub rings from Alex @ Tirerack. He sells really nice anodized aluminum rings specifically for Volks and SSR's. The price was great ($27 for a set of four...$51 with overnight shipping). I did order an extra set from upgrade motoring and they looked like cut pipes...and the cost was almost twice as much ...they are going back...
Is your 18" SSR centerbore 65mm?

Well, I checked out the wheels today and they aren't ready. One of the wheels was so banged up that it can't be fixed 100% but pretty close they told me. They wanted to let me know before they began repairs. 3 of the 4 are fixed and painted, just waiting to be machined and clearcoated, but they're waiting to fix the 4th before they finish. They used the BMW Code I supplied them with to color-match. Like I said the clearcoat isn't on yet but from what I saw the color looks spot on and I can't wait to get them on.
Tomorrow HOPEFULLY...

$500 total
But hey as long as they look good, totally worth it
I'm just hoping the wheels are done tomorrow and on the damn car already, this is killing me lol..
I called Alex @ Tire Rack today and I think I remember him telling me $24 for the set of Hub Rings plus shipping.. prolly like $30 Shipped.
Next question, are there any nice SSR Center Cap replacements? And, I would assume I could buy the SSR Decals at Tire Rack? Although I may leave 'em clean...

^^ that's not bad. ive been kinda thinking about doing this on mine too
cause i want a refresh on my car (well, not really, but im just
kinda bored...LOL )
the rings i got are by Kics for my other car's KICS spacers.
those are not cheap..but it is amazing how well they cut it.. the
fitment is absolutely perfect.
yep, tirerack should be able to get you the caps and the decals.

Did you just want replacements, or an alternative to the SSR caps from TireRack? If you want replacements, I have a new set of chrome plastic SSR caps that I can sell at good price. PM me if interested.
I searched but didn't find alternative caps that would fit. TireRack has metal SSR center caps that look better than the standard issue plastic version and cost a lot more. They are the ones I'm using.

I agree, the plastic ones look really cheap and clunky. The metal ones are an improvement although I still wouldn't describe them as good looking. The corners are more rounded and more importantly the cap is not quite as tall as the absurdly tall plastic version. It would look better if the cap were still much shorter -- the MINI hub doesn't need the clearance. When I bought my SSR wheels, they arrived with no caps because the standard plastic ones were out of stock and backordered. To make up for it, Alex gave me a good deal and sold me a set of the metal caps at the plastic price. The metal caps are normally very expensive, like $40 each!
Here they are on my 15x7 SSR Comps. I use OEM logo stickers for a stealthy look.
Here's a closeup from the TireRack website. The "SSR" is engraved into the metal.

Picking them up around 3 or 4 most likely but they will be done today. They are all painted and ready to be machined and clearcoated. However, they may powdercoat the wheels at no extra cost to me . They only bake them at 350* for powdercoating so they'll be fine.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the ridiculously tall plastic caps. Those metal ones look good, and I like how you added the MINI centercap decal. But at $160 for the set I think I'll have to live with the plastic caps...
