Wheel/Tire sizing question - I'm lost

Alright, I've got a 2k3 MCS with H-Sport springs and Yellow Konis, and I'm looking to get new wheels. I've currently got 215/40/16 on SSP Type C (SSR knock offs), and it sits real low, but I've got some wheel gap. I also have a set of Rota Circuit 10s with 205/55/16s on them that were on the car that the previous owner also had, but he said they were to big like that and created some rub. I currently do not have any type of BBK on the car, though I might somewhere down the road.

What I'm looking for is to go to a 17 or 18 inch wheel that keep about the same ride height, maybe fill up some of my wheel gap, and still fit under the car. I just have no way to figure out how to get a wheel/tire combo to go with. I'm leaning towards Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s, or something with the look, in a 17x7, but I have no idea how to figure out what tires to put on them. Also, I'm intending to keep at least 1 set of my current wheels to put all weathers on, considering I've got to deal with snow part of the year and this is my daily driver, and I'd like to put performance summer tires on the 17s.

So my questions:
Should I bother going to a 17 or 18 inch wheel? What about wider then 7"?
Is changing size going to screw up anything else, like braking (besides my speedo, which is already off)?
Do I really need to mess with summer/winter wheels and tires if I'm not going to really track the car competitivly?
If I change wheel size, how can I tell if they will fit under the car as it stands?

if you can find a nice +43 wheel, i would do the 17x7.5" and
run 215/45/17 setup for street. if it's 17x7, i would just keep
the 205/45/17 tires. tires look best with a slight stretch.

in your current knock-off wheels, most people run either 205/50/16 or
215/45/16. 215/40 is a bit too thin for that drop.

Ok, next items:

Ok, any suggestions on a 17x7.5 +43 wheel, and where to find 'em? I'm not *really* picky, so long as I can get all black, preferably matte. I haven't seen anything that really got me on tirerack, and for reference I really like the Pro Race 1.2 and Ultraleggras.

As for my current tires, I didn't pick them, that's the way they came when I bought the car. They are pretty new Falkens, and I can't really justify replacing right now.

My main issue is that I don't like the look (mostly because they aren't black, black SSRs are very nice) of the knock-offs, and I can't fit the tires that are on the (gunmetal) Rotas under the car, but like the look of those wheels better. I've considered swapping the tires on them and running the Rota's but haven't gotten around to it and figured that if I was going to spend money to do wheels/tires I might as well just buy new and get exactly what I want. Mostly that is matte black wheels in 17 or 18 that make the ride look a bit better while keeping the low stance I have, with tires that have good street performance, in all weather if possible but not required. And I've got wheels that are silver (SSPs) and gunmetal (Rotas) along with tires that are slightly to thin, or are deffinatly to fat. It's frustrating because I'm happy with almost everything else that the previous owner did to the car for performance mods, so I just want wheels (and stripes, but that's a different subject.)

ok, dat was too much reading for me. as far as 17x7.5's in black,
the only way i would go is the Comps in black.

Try this tire size calculator. Just put in the stock tire size and you are ready to go.

TIRE SIZE CALCULATOR

This should be a sticky.

Honesty is the best policy!

If you mean the SSRs in black, I agree, but they are a bit to pricey for me at the momment. I can live without the 17x7.5, so I might just opt for the Ultraleggra and save a few $
