Big brake kits and wheels... updated list
#201
I'm looking at Todd's P1 Track Kit with the 12.19 rotors in front and the Wilwood Parking Brake Kit for the rear. I have two sets of OEM wheels (R121 Conical Spokes and R110 Pace Star), both of which seem a little too shallow for the calipers to clear. 5mm doens't seem like lot of difference, but I guess they only need to clear by a bit to work huh?
Even with careful measurements it feels like a leap of faith to just order and hope all will fit. I've got a buddy who owns a tire / brake shop who will do the install, so I've at least got some pro help there.

That is a great kit. Had that on my '07 S. A lot of stopping power.
Do I assume correctly that you intend to track your MINI? Then the added 5 mm of a set of spacers would be helpful for tire wear. The 48 mm offset that the stock MINI wheels have results in a fair amount of rollover of the front tires in corners. Less offset, which the spacers will provide, helps to improve that. Yes, they only need to clear a little bit. 5 mm is just over 3/16", you could that amount of cardboard and set it on the wheel hub and measure the clearance again. Also, if I remember right, the template that Wilwood gives is a little conservative as it doesn't have the rounded corners of the actual caliper, although that too is a leap of faith.
Good luck with it.

Duaflex,
I have the Wilwood 12.19 rotor and Pace Star wheel on my Clubman right now with the 5mm spacer and they clear fine. They are required since interference occurs at side of the spokes nearest the rim, there is plenty of space in the diameter. Rather interesting that my Enkei RS+M 16inch wheels clear with no spacers.

It sounds like 5mm should be enough extra for the R121's and definitely for the R110's.
Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for the info. I appreciate knowing the Pace Spokes will work with 5mm spacers.
Cheers.

This is a real good representation of how the spoke clearance has such and effect on the brake kit. This is a 16" wheel and fits, yet larger 17" wheels don't; not because of the diameter but the wheel design.

The 11.75 is an upgrade for the standard 276mm discs, but not the 294mm

Here is at least one MINI that didn't find the 11.75 Wilwood kit a waste of time:
Trust me, that is not a slow time around that track and yes that is a street car.
I do know the owner of that MINI and have ridden in the car and can attest the the capabilities of the brakes. They are much better than the single piston R56 MINI brakes, which I have run.
There is more to a set of brakes than weight and diameter of the rotors. There is the ability to through repeated high speed braking applications without fading. Even with the same high end race pads both setups, the Wilwoods perform better, I've been there, done that.
I suspect Todd is right (what would he know??? ), putttn just needs a better pad and if he is going out on the track, a good brake flush.

Gotta love that run in a street car, and the view out the sunroof was just an extra delight.
I've had the Wilwood 12.2in with BP-10 pads on my Clubman for almost a year and they are far superior to the stock brakes. From what I calculated the 12.2in Wilwood pad area and piston area are only about the same or even less than stock, but they perform much better. I wore out the stock pads and rotors at 18k, and always had dust on the wheels. I have driven the Wilwoods the same for almost 8k miles now and can't detect rotor or pad wear, likewise the dust is hardly there. The brakes do not fade like the stock setup did and most importantly in a particular panic stop the grip was phenomenal - I'm sure it saved me an accident. The only difference I see between the 12.2in and the 11.75in is the extra leverage so if your not satisfied with the 11.75in I would simply try the more aggressive pad.
It's also not trivial that the unsprung weight savings is more than I got with lightweight wheels. Needless to say I'm never going back to stock.
