Upgrading to 17" Rims

Hello,

I've been reading through this forum for a while now trying to get a better understanding on choosing tires and wheels.

If I wanted to swap out my stock 16" wheels with 17" wheels, are there other things that need to be changed on the car? Is it as easy as a swapping them out?

I'm a bit of a noob with all of this so I'm still learning all the details and nuance of choosing a wheel/tire.

My 07 MCS is my daily driver and I just started taking it to autocross a few weeks ago. Caught the last event of the season. But I plan on having a nice high performance vehicle as my daily driver that will also be setup well for autocross.

I'm interested in doing the following:

Add 17" Wheels
Add Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (There shouldn't be any snow where I'll be living in a few months)
Add H&R Springs to lower the suspension
Adjust to a negative Camber

Can the OEM camber plates be adjusted to reach a moderate negative camber?

Thanks!

no issues at all.
just keep in mind that sometime in '06 (on the R53) they switched to 14mm dia. studs (in prep. for the R56), so "old" wheels won't fit "new" studs.

Good choice on tire... I have new (unmounted so far) 215-40R17s, but having snow on the ground keeps me from mounting and reporting how great they are...

As I've been doing more reading on the forums, I think that I would like to plan on lowering my suspension using adjustable coilovers instead of just using lowering springs (especially since I have stock suspension).

I've read a few posts where too large an offset on tires won't clear the suspension components.

With 17" rims and coilovers (haven't decided which coilovers yet) is this something I should be worried about?

I'll probably get the 17" wheels and tires before I put money down on suspension mods.

What are the offset ranges that I should be considering if I'm planning on having coilovers installed? Does that even change anything?

Thanks guys!

If you are looking for 17" auto-x setup, we are currently having a sale on Enkei NT03+M which weigh 17 lbs. The wheels are a perfect auto-X wheel for the Mini. If you decide on this wheel or any for that matter, I suggest a 215/45R17 for better traction on the course.

Thanks for the info! I'm not a big fan of that "webbed" look for rims.

I Was thinking more along the lines of a dark colored rim with with polished edges.

I was looking at the following wheels:

Most Interested:

http://www.edgeracing.com/2007/Mini/..._S/wheel/1549/
http://www.edgeracing.com/2007/Mini/..._S/wheel/2172/

Also Considering:

http://www.edgeracing.com/2007/Mini/..._S/wheel/1591/
http://www.edgeracing.com/2007/Mini/..._S/wheel/3092/
http://www.edgeracing.com/2007/Mini/Cooper_S/wheel/350/

I noticed that some of those wheels have varying width's of 7 or 7.5. Will that present any problems on tire choice?

I was interested in the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 since I'll be in Dallas and I hear they don't get much in the way of snow

I'm still new to this so I'm learning as I go. I'm definitely open to any feedback anyone might have about my choices above. I'm trying to hit the right balance between daily driving and auto-X concerns (usually leaning towards auto-x).

For auto-X, I would recommend the the 5zigen FN01R-C because its the lightest and then the Raze R74. The other ones would be good for satreet use, but too heavy for auto-X. The widths between 7 and 7.5 won't make that big of a difference unless you are mounting a 205/45R17 because it will stretch on the 7.5.
