How will 215-45-17 or 225-45-17 impact speedo and fit?

I am looking to upgrade to 17" non-RF tires with lower weight 17 inch wheels when my MCS arrives next month. I know that 205-45-17 is the standard stock size for 17" wheels but I would like to get something wider. I would prefer to stay with 45s rather than 40s to give me a bit more protection and a slightly better ride.

I may drop it slightly in the future but no major slam jobs, etc. is expected in my future. I don't know what the suspension options (springs) but I can't see dropping it more than about 1 inch at most.

Please let me know what you think. Do I need to go with 40 series if I go with the wider tires?

Thanks!

I recently went from 205/45R17s to 215/45R17s
The rolling diameter changed from 24.26 to 24.62 (for new, unworn tires)

The change is approx. 1%
or at 100mph, your speedo will read 99mph.
Worn 215s will read approx. what a new 205 will read.

If you feel that you need (or want) to goto 225s, I'd goto 40-series.
225/45R17s yield a dia of 24.97 or 3% lower (100mph = speedo reads 97
225/40R17s yield a dia of 24.09 or 1% higher (100mph = speedo reads 101)

So short story is
215/45
225/40

HTH.

Great feedback Jason. It sounds like 215/45/17 is the way to go for me.

I think I may go with OZ UL 17" wheels which are 7" wide. I have used OZ wheels in the past and I was very happy with them.

Does anyone else have any comments on this?

215/45R17 will be the better size to not affect the spedometer.
