Question for Alex...
#1
Alex, I got new wheels put on (16x7 APEX racing wheels) and got rid of the stock 16". I had Mavis mount and balance them.....when I drove on the highway the wheel would vibrate over 50mph... So I took it back to Mavis and they said the wieghts fell off and that they put them on a different method this time. I get on the highway.....same problem. Do I have to take it back a THIRD time? Any ideas?

I am not Alex, but here it goes:
If the weights keep on falling off, they should attach them using clips instead of glue.
If the weights are not falling off, then you either have out of round tires (happens all the time with Kumho street tires).
If the wheels require centering rings, make sure that they got put on. Our cars require hub centered wheel mounting.
If all of these are correct, I would try a different tire/wheel place, maybe you can find a place that specializes in race car alignment, tires etc. They usually have the experience to tell you what's going on.

If the diameter of the wheel is larger than the hub, then you will need centering rings. If you bought these from Tirerack, they should have told you whether you needed these or not.
If you did not buy them from Tirerack, then you may want to ask them.
You will know whether you need these or not. If when you mount the wheel and before the bolts are on,
the wheels are loose on the hub you will need them. See the cross sectional drawing below:
Hub Wheel

****%|-----| (where % represents the centering ring)
Does this make sense??

>>did you order centering rings with your wheels ant?
>>this is the problem ordering wheels from places that don't know mini's too well!
>>sorry to hear about your troubles.
>>order the rings and you'll be straight.!
If I put the stock ones back on will my car be okay? MINI Service is closed tomm, so I have to take it back to Mavis and I am getting worried that even they put the stocks back on....that Ive caused some sort of permanent damage.

Ant,
Sounds like alot of frustration. Many factors could be at play..
1st off wheels may have radial run out (not round) this can feel like OOR tires, kinda hoppy if you will.
We may have tires out of round, have them and the wheel checked on a GSP9700 Hunter roadforce balancer. It measures force variation, and can measure runout on the wheels.
The mini does require hubcentering rings, an easy way to see if you have them is, if you can raise a wheel up to the hub, and it will sit up there without lugs, firmly. Press it against the hub, and slide it up and down, its should stay put. if it moves an inch or so, you need rings.
Make sure the package is in good balance.
If stick on weights are used, make sure the area inside the wheel has been cleaned and degreased, even oil from you hands on the rim, will help weights fall off.
I stay away from clip weights, as the damage the finnish, and can promote peeling.
These are all things that Tirerack takes responsibilty for on our packages.
