Comments on Toyo Proxes 4's

I installed a set of Toyo Proxes 4's last weekend. 215-45-17's mounted on Enkei RPF1's 17X7 ET 43mm. I ordered the aluminum Hub-centric rings.

I am very disappointed with the steering response. The Toyo's are a lot mushier than the stock Goodyear runflats I had. I have put a couple of miles on them already and they have yet to improve. Today was the first dry weather that we have had and the tail stepped out on me on a corner I used to take a lot faster with the stock run flats.

I would be interested to see what other people have to say about the steering reponse. Personally I like sharp crisp steering. I do not like the tire roll I am getting upon turn-in.

There is a little more sidewall there if you went from a 205/45-17. Might be to blame for some of it. Although, I went from 205/45-17 stock runflats to 215/45-17 all season Bridgestone RE960 non runflats and thought the handling was improved. The runflats I had were the Conti all season. I think they are a touring tire and not a hi perf tire. I really considered those Toyos.

Since last Saturday, I have Toyo 4's (205/40/18) on my 08 MCS. I will be taking them off as soon as my Michelin PS2's arrive. Toyo steering response was too mushy and the tires seemed prone to wandering/darting/veering. BTW, Toyo advertises a 500 mile test on the Toyo 4's. If you don't like them you can return the tires to a Toyo dealer for a refund or exchange.

I've been driving the Proxes 4's for more than 20k miles now, and I honestly can't imagine being able to corner any better. I have an '03 MCS, and the previous owner put them on. He actually put 205's and 215's on, which I haven't quite figured out.

I certainly haven't noticed any mushiness or roll.

Are you saying that your tires are not all the same size- some 205/45-17 and some 215/45-17, like two of one size in the front and two in the back.

If so that is less than optimal and not recommended for best handling and performance.

Mixing tire sizes you can do with you have no choice or as a temporary means to extend tire life before a complete set can be purchased.

For these two sizes they are different diameters and different widths and have different height of sidewalls even if they are the same tires and both 45 series sidewalls. They can also have different load ratings- keep tire pressures up.

If you drive sanely on the street you will probably be OK. If you do performance driving then plan to make one size for all four.

Toyo Proxes 4 is more of a general street tire- UHP All Season.

If you want performance and good handling then look for Ultra High Performance summer tires. If you don't mind faster wearing and higher prices then consider Max performance Summer tires.
