Best 215/45/17 tire for MY needs
ok ok, I've done a search and haven't been able to find exactly what I'm looking for and I need help. I want to make the right decision on tires so here's my criteria:
- I live in Las Vegas. Hardly any rain. More warm weather than cold weather. I would think I can get away with a high performance tire with these conditions, right?
- Must feel grippy and secure going into any corner.
- They will be daily drivers so comfort would be nice.
- Tires will not be tracked.
- Must have great treadwear. I want to use these for awhile!
- Price is NOT an issue

Since price is not of big concern-
I'd suggest All Season tires since it does get colder at night part of the year and handling will be better with Ultra HP tires over High Performance All Season tires. Some HP All Season tires do provide slightly longer treadlife like Yokohama Avid H4S.
At Tirerack.com (Ultra High Performance All Season tires)
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS $146 400 treadwear
Yokohama Advan S.4. $164 400 treadwear
BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S $120 400 treadwear
Yokohama Avid W4S $98 400 treadwear
For those on a budget
Kumho Ecsta ASX $89 420 treadwear
Another strategy is to go with a more comfortable street tire that wears well but still offers reasonably good handling.
In Grand Touring All Season tires-
Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge $111 440 treadwear
General Altimax HP $86 440 treadwear
At Edgeracing.com both UHP All Season tires
Falken Ziex Ze-912 $84 360 treadwear
Toyo Proxes 4 $105 300 treadwear
No matter what. For good treadwear, keep tire pressures up about 38 psi cold, rotate tires every 4000-5000 miles and don't take corners too aggressively.

This shows that for about 4 months of the year temperatures will dip to 40 routinely.

The minimum temperature is quite a bit lower based on past record lows albeit rare.
None the less, cold temperatures will affect summer tires while All Season tires are much less affected.

Ha! Good one, Hune....
Sorry.... having a MINI and not cornering "too aggressively" is like owning a Hummer and not taking it off-road...
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
I'm just helping my local tire guy pay for college for his 8 kids.

Following Paul/Blimey through the Dragon and related roads all weekend, I can vouch for that!
BTW, I have those BFGs on my stock rims as "winter tires" and they're good, and the S.Drives I run in "summer" aka this weekend, did GREAT compared to them.
If I lived in Vegas, I'd run UHPs all the time, but--I'm like that, runs with scissors, takes corners WAY too fast in an attempt to keep up with Paul, oh and my Tacoma has a smashed quarter panel from four wheeling into a tree, too!

The higher the treadlife number the longer it's supposed to last, correct? Is there a number that one should absolutely not go below? Where do speed ratings come into play??

For the price, I really like the Falken 912's. They handle the way I need them to, they make rotating easier (assymetrical) and are very quiet.

One I would suggest taking a look at is the new Goodyear Eagle GT. $102 per tire at tire rack with 400 tread wear. I've got a friend who has them on his Acura and loves them. I have yet to drive the car with them but have road in it. He had the Kumho MX on prior to this tire, they were nice but the eagles handle much better, and it's an all-season tire where the MX is a summer performance tire. The Eagle GT is assymetrical just like the Falken 912. I currently have the 912's in 205/45/17 and they aren't bad, only thing I have ran into is that they seem a little slick when cold, but get them warmed up and the stick very nicely. If you are looking for something really really stickey the Hankook ventus R-S2 (200 treadwear) or the Ventus S1 EVO (280 treadwear) should fit your needs. Hope this helps.
