New Member, Old Questions

Hi, all!

I'm the happy owner of an '05 S sport, with the 17" run flats. And it's time to replace them. I'm looking at a wheel upgrade with a normal tire and am narrowing things down as best I can with consideration primarily to price (150 per being tops), and secondly to weight.

Naturally, I've spent some time at the Tire Rack, and among the offerings I've noticed quite a variation in offsets. Do I need to concern myself with that aspect?

Staying with 17s, the choices thus far:

ASA AR1
20.7 lbs

Enkei Performance RZ-5
19 lbs (I'm thinking a website typo)

Kazera KZ-J
22 lbs

Sport Edition CD
22 lbs

Sport Edition F7
22 lbs

Sport Tuning Turbine
19.5

And I've also just found this attractive wheel here on this forum:

Konig Twilite
Unknown weight

I'm using the Search funtion, but there are no shortage of threads and it's taking crazy time. If you should choose to lend your thoughts I'd appreciate it greatly.

I've found wheels, much like choosing the color of your Mini at the last moment, a bit of headache cause of the choices you have. That said you might also consider Konig Feathers since its below your price range and is light at 17 lbs for the 17x7 compared to your other choices. Offset might only be an issue if you're planning later on getting a BBK or lowering your car and not planning how to get around it with spacers, etc.

Thanks, darmog.

Googled around and found 17" silver Feathers on a color combo like mine. Very pretty!

Now to shop vendors...

I do not know the offset of my standard equipment 8-spokes, nor what is to be gained or lost from deviating.

Your OEM S-lites have an offset of ET48. Generally speaking, you want to keep the offset number at 37 or higher to be safe, and to have no adverse side effects such as rubbing. The lower the offset number, the further out the wheel is pushed, which does result in more muck being thrown from the tires to the bodywork, especially noticeable in winter. A lighter wheel will feel better, the Konigs are light, as well as the Kosei K1-TS, give these a look.

Well, it's time to pull the trigger.

I'm now down to deciding between the Konig Feather, Twilite, or Foil. As I very much need tires too, I wish I could purchase a ready-to-bolt-on package, much like what the Tire Rack offers. But it looks like the old-fashioned route of local (high price) mounting and balancing is what I'll have to do.

Now to find a reputable Konig retailer.

To clarify: I would go with the Tire Rack for a package, but they don't offer Konigs. And while Discount Tire Direct does, they don't carry Michelin.

Life.

Are you deadset on Michelins? What are you looking for in terms of importance in tires? I just replaced my Dunlop oem runflats recently because of wear. At 16k the fronts were down to the wear bars but the rears probably could've gotten another 5-10k more miles. Didn't want to bother with runflats because of price and performance. Towards the end of their life, the Dunlops were constantly slipping from a dead stop. Don't know how many times I was spinning tires when I went from a stop light or turning into a street from a dead stop. I went with the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec. It probably has the same life of an oem runflat from what I've read but with much better performance and cheaper price that I'm willing to replace them whenever they wear. This tire really sticks to the road. On Tire Rack, the 16" which is the size I got, was only about $103 I think. Wait, looks like they've gone down some more to $98. Very nice tire for that price. There's some 17" sizes you can use in $114-$121 price range, but with your model year rubbing might be an issue.

Like an idiot, I wrote Michelin, but meant Bridgestone. Specifically the Potenza G 019 Grid, in second place in a Tire Rack evaluation of two-dozen hi-po all-seasons.

Okay, here's what it's boiled down to:

Koenig Foil -- 4-11 4x100 17 inch, to go along with the stock size tires (205-45/17)

I believe it's the correct fitment, and would appreciate confirmation. Thanks.
