New Mini owner here and have questions..

Just picked up my new 09 MC and already want to change my wheels.. Looking at Elbrus 105 in 17.5".. I've been looking for pictures on this site but haven't found any yet.. My question is.. Is 23lbs heavy or inline with stock wheels? Also does the mini come with TPMS on the std 15" wheels?

17.5" is a pretty odd size for rims and you will have problem finding tires for them.

23 lbs. is heavy, but about the same as the stock Crown Spoke, or Web Spoke 17" wheels. A lightweight 17" wheel would be around 16 lbs.

If you want light-weight, go with a smaller wheel. For example, Rota Slipstreams are listed as these weights:

15x7 is only 11.8 pound per wheel! 16x7 is 13.9 pounds. 17x7.5 is 18.15 pounds each.

I think he means 17x7.5. The Elbrus 105 are available in that size.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I did mean to say 17" x 7.5" width wheels. I think I've locked in on the Elbrus 105 wheels. I saw someone on this board with these in 17" and it looks great.
Now I'm stuck with either choosing 16" or 17" wheels.
I just traded out of a 328Xi coupe which had the harshest ride of any car I have ever driven and I kind of like the cushion of the 15" stock wheels. I'm a little concerned that if I go to 17" I'll go back to a harsh ride...

Generally, if you think the BMW 328xi coupe has a harsh ride, I would stick with the 16" as it is less harsh than the 17".

The best thing to do is go test drive a similar suspensioned Mini with a 16" and a 17" and see what you think.

My 2007 MCS came with 17" Crown Spokes as part of a package. I replaced them with 16 lb. 17x7 wheels. I later bought a set of 14 lb. 16x7 wheels. Both wheels get 205 width tires. I much prefer the ride of the 16" wheels.

What size tire are you using on the 16" wheels? 205-50-16?

What effects does the 7.5 make in the "17x7.5" rim of the elbrus, compared to the "17x7" ?

The 7 or 7.5 is the width of the wheel. 7.5's will strech a given tire harder giving better cornering. 7's as an example will offer more protection against curb rash than 7.5's on any given tire.

^^ Thanks Alex!

I have another question, I see that certain wheels have certain offset, i'm a new mini owner myself and I was wondering if it matters what offset the wheel is? If it matters, if the offset is different what does that mean for me?

Thanks for the help! sorry if this was a silly question

Very good question actually. Offset describes the wheel's position in our out of the fender. Its is measured off the centerline to the mounting flange of the wheel in mm

Offset is tricky because it also depends on wheel design. You could have 2 wheels the exact same size and offset, one may clear your brakes, one may not. Its case by case on each wheel.

As a basic rule, when addressing 7 inch wide wheels on a Mini - Anything ET42 or higher fits without rubbing.

Anything et35-et41 may fit, but if you run 215 with tires, some fender work with a dremel may be required as these wheel combos stick out further.
