Good 16" performance tires w/ not much noise?

Is there a good consensus amongst forumers here on good 16 inch tires? On tirerack, when I stick to the OEM size for my MCCS, I get THREE tire choices, none good.

I have spec'ed out some 17s, wheels and tires, but I want to look at cost and what I could get staying with 16".

thanks

If you go slightly wider, then drop the aspect ratio down to keep about the same diameter. On GEN1 cars, you can get 205/50R16, up from the stock 195/55R16.
Not sure how it translates on GEN2, as I don't have their size, but this size swap seems pretty common, and is done by most for the same reason as you are emoting.....few options in the stock sizes,
This will open up lots more options, and keep the diameter close enough to stock to avoid problems, and you will not have any rubbing problems.
Since you are in the Mass area, have you tried the MassMotoring Club?

On tirerack, are you selecting OEM tires or all tires that are the size of your existing tires? If you select OEM, all you get back are runflat choices (which returned 5 options for 195/55R16 for me). But if I select all tires, I got 26 choices. Switching to 205/50 bumps it up to 41 and 205/55 yields 136 choices.

I'm running 205/55Rx16 Conti runflats on my 07 R56. There are no issues with fit, and the speedo is OK. There are alot of choices with the 205/55Rx16's.

You can use 205/50-16s on a Gen2 as well, I use those. The best ones I've found are Michelin PE2s, but Michelin has just discontinued those. Yokohama S.Drives are also pretty good.

On my 07 R56 (Gen2) I have run 205/50x16 in two tire types.

I had the Falken 912's which I liked for the first 5-6K then they got noisy and were ok in the snow (m&s rated). I dumped them at 12K miles.

Now I run a set of Goodyear GSD3 for the track in 205/50x16 and the are excellent on as Spring/Summer peformance tires.

I run 17s for the street most of the time. Current tire is the Nitto Neo Gen. Very good, very quiet and good in all of our Colorado seasons.

Does the Kumho ASX come in a size that fits your wheels? If so, that's a great all around tire for our cars!

Will Michelin be replacing the PE2 with something as good or better? I have a set of 205/45-17 and they seem good.

I have 205/55-16 on a set of 16x7 wheels, but don't like the tires I have on them now.

You can use 205/50-16 or 205/55-16 tires on the factory 16x6.5 wheels. The 205/50-16 will be about 1/3" smaller in dia. than your factory tires. 205/55-16 tires will be about 1/2" larger in dia. than your factory tires.

I don't know, but they're still making 205/45-17, its only the 205/50-16s they're discontinuing it seems. (They're also still doing 205/55-16 as well.)

16" Conti's runflats FS

I've got a set of Run Flat Continentals 195/55 16 OEM that I took off my 09 Mini S Convertible and replaced the with Michelins, non run flat in order to get a better ride. There's a TOTAL of 40 (FORTY) miles on them, they are as new when they came off the car last Sept (09). Price is $300 for the set of all 4 and you pay shipping or I can deliver within 100 miles from Pensacola FL. Or you can pick them up. I just need the space. Call me at 850-384-2856 cell, or 859-434-5048 home anytime.--------Jay

Ive had good results with the Azensis rt-615, not the best treadwear rating, but I'll be buying another set when these have run out.

Thanks for the replies; I looked at tirerack's Ultra High Perf All-Season test results, sorted by Noise. I used to ride 18" Potenza s03s in my last car and I despise tire noise now.
