Brakes!!! OMG

Just note that DOT 4 fluid used in MINI's does not play as well with moisture as DOT 3, so MINI recommends/requires a brake flush every 2 years...the dealers did it for free just for asking..they usually "forgot" under the free 3 year 36,000 mile maintenance plan....considering how expensve brake components like the hydrolic pumps etc are....it is cheap to do!!

Thanks everybody for the excellent advice!
I did some more investigation, and "Just Brakes" will do it for $300, and a good independant shop I found will do the same for $350. This is much more reasonable.
I am no mechanic, but I've done brakes before, I may try the DIY route. It is especially good to know that I do not have to replace the rotors as long as they are within spec. Also good to know why my ride creates so much brake dust...
Again, thanks for all the great responses.
Peace

There are a lot of people on this forum and I see that one vendor already stated that he could help you. I would go that route if I were you.

AVOID JUST BRAKES LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!! Find a trustworthy shop to do the work. Just brakes will likely tell you that your calipers are frozen or some crap just to charge you more. I used them once and laughed as they sat there and tried to lie to me about my wife's car. I told them to put it back together as the guy was clearly lying to me and after I checked the caliper (of course finding it was fine).

when i lived in Aurora CO, their reputation was less than steller.....part of the problem is the use parts from the cheaper "consumer" lines, rather than the pro lines...so the brake jobs are in a word...the cheapest you can get...not a good deal considering you are paying for labor....and the pads will smoke and melt first time going over the pass after the tunnel on I-70...if you make it that far!!!

Another issue to remember w/ "chain" repair shops is that corporate liability lawyers have written the SOP's for repairs, allowing little variation in parts usage or pricing - i.e. if they run into an issue, your cost and hassle are going to rise expotentially. (Off-thread example: I went to a Wallyworld Auto because I needed some tires swapped for a track-time, and they were the only ones that could do it in the time frame I needed - 2 layers of management approval and numerous liability-release forms later, [because I was switching from 205's to "oversize" 215's ], I got them on; but never again! I'm in my 40's, I've got the tools in the back, helmets on the seat and the ##'s on the car, and he's still talking to me like I'm a 16 year-old - covering his a$$...)
Plus, corporate profit/cost calculations require speed of repairs, thus the parts you get are (usually) the ones they can find the fastest; w/ our 'special little cars' parts are (usually) not as plentiful at parts stores, so you're gonna get what they can get regardless of quality or cost ...

Some good reading about them and falls right in line with the tactics they use to get you to spend money.
