suspension and wheel size question

09 jcw
I have 2 questions with regards to tire sizes. I currently have the stock 205 45 17 but am looking into buying some autocross tires and wheels for track use only. I am leaning towards Hoosier A6 and want to know if anyone has installed 225 40 18 with a 40MM offset without any scrubbing in the fender wells? I tried to contact Miniusa.com and ask them what the maximum suspension travel (no load to normal bump stop impact) is so I could find any interference . They refered me to a dealer who said talk to a tire vendor, they didn't know. So....
What are the biggest tires and wheel offsets that have been installed?
What is the no load to bumpstop suspension vertical travel distance?
Thank you
Don

the Hoosier A6 runs pretty wide. the 205/50 A6 I used to run had the same tread width as a 225 street tire, darned near 9".

I just managed to get them on the back axle, with a touch of rubbing on the fender liners and little clearance to spare.

I'm a bit skeptical as to whether the 225 A6 would have enough room.

Sorry, that is not a direct answer.

Can't answer most of your questions but, I'm running a 235/40R17 with a +45 offset and so far, not having any significant issues. The tires are Kumho Ecsta ASX. .1" greater diameter than the OEM Conti's and they are over an inch wider.

Most autox enthusiasts I know do not run such large rims as they are too heavy.

Perhaps a post in the NAM track and autox section would get you more answers.

I always recommend the smallest diameter rims allowable in whatever class you are running. It is much cheaper, the wheels are lighter, and to generalize, a smaller diameter wheel and tire package is better for getting out of corners in auto x. That's not always true if you are running on bigger courses and running out of second gear on straight stretches, but generally I think it's true.

Why not go with 225/40-17 for the Hoosiers for Track and 215/40-17 for the Autocross tires. For a dual purpose tire a 215/40-17 like the Dunlop Star Spec or Yokohama AD08. I myself prefer 15s but 16 are ok too, but 18s are more for steet/cruise/show
